Diablo IV - Any detail about cooldowns/character progression/customization?

According to a guy on RPG codex

  • No stats (ok…attack, defense, life)
  • cooldowns
  • linear talent tree
  • no procedurally generated maps
  • but…but…its dark…and “gritty”…
  • basiclally its D3…dumbed down…with darker graphics…

Is he right? He mentioned demo streams and character sheet from Diablo 4. If every lv 50 druid is a clone of eath other wearing different pieces of clothing who determines how much muscle mass and his intelligence, i will pass. If i can’t make a dedicated weredruid that can be in animal form without cooldowns and call hurricanes/tornados without cooldowns, i will pass.

edit - gameplay video

1:50 - Druid
23:15 - Sorceress
44:30 - Barbarian
44:20 - David Kim appears and starts to talk

I really liked the Druid gameplay. Was thinking that it would be awful just because cooldowns but got surprized. Druids looks heavily inspired by Celtic mythology.

The systems & features panel tomorrow is going to make or break this game. Just having darker/grittier graphics isn’t enough.

Actually yes it is enough sadly…

Overall the mainstream blob of “gamer people” love D3, and find all the numbers, stats and extra bits, nothing but a bunch of scary rocket science that distracts them from zipping around killing zombies…

D4 will in all likelihood be much of the same luke warm simplicity, but in less colour.

The Skill Trees in D4 look more like Skill Sticks…

I pray that I am wrong…

One screenshot on codex https://imgur.com/a/QCNBkVa looks like the information was right.

Always keep in mind that these things are subject to change.

My goodness… “attack” and “defense”?

No more of this Strength, Dexterity, Magic class identity and gear specialization? I hope I’m wrong. They pulled this same crap during D3 development.

World map is static like campaign in D3.

Dungeons are procedural.

I know, but seriously. Cooldowns and attack/defense/health is so awful…

I agree, too simplistic for me.

So far, so linear. Hmm. Well, it’s early days.

I’m nervous. So many things can go wrong from now until launch.

D4 being playable on consoles is already a major red flag for me. D3 was built for consoles… look how that turned out. It all comes down to are they making the game playable for 8 year olds (like D3 was designed), or are they making the game for the D2 veterans?

Some things are subject to change, everyone hated cooldowns in D3 and that didn’t get them removed.

Those stats are looking really really bad with a lot of people, it’s like skyrim stats.

Yep. Mainly because IRvine Blizzard is too used with post wow mmo design. They probably never heard other way to balance powerfull skills and healing. Hint : See Dark Souls and most 90s RPG’s.

And BUGthesda managed to dumb down it further. With fallout 4. SPECIAL was so amazing, why they get rid of it?

They should spend less time writing stories on items and spend more time making items good and looking good. Absolute garbage. The worst rare ring in D2 LoD is better than the best legendary ring in D3 and it’s expansion D4. D2 ring art style is also far superior to the D3/D4 art style.

What is the D3/D4 item art style? Cartoonish water colours on construction paper?

Looks very simplistic but at least better than the itemization and looks very classic wow inspired.

what would be your suggestion on the implementation of stats?

Cause in D2 it doesn’t mean anything too, it was like:
Str enough to wear equip
Dex enough to wear equip
Max vita
nothing energy

and that’s it… sometimes you could make a ES sorc or some max block build but nothing fancy.

I understand the cooldown beause it works like a way to prevent 1 skill builds.

Like in Diablo 2 you would have 30 skills and only use ONE to kill the enemies.

Blizzard Sorceress
Zeal Paladin
Whirlwind Barbarian

And problably there will be a lot of legendary items that remove the cooldown of a skill, so if you want to play the “press one button build” you would be able to

Well, there are stats, and more than attack/defense/life.
There are cooldowns.
Talent trees are not entirely linear, but they sure looks boring right now.
There are procedurally generated maps, but the overworld is supposedly static.

You don’t think that maybe it was that way because strength and dexterity did basically nothing to increase damage. If they had increased damage in any meaninful way then it would be a different story.

actually str increased damage my friend
