They did so because the DX12 wrapper for Windows 7 only includes feature set 12_0, and D2R appears to be using extensions from 12_1. At least it isn’t using feature set 12_2 (DX12 Ultimate), which would require a GPU virtually nobody can get right now or even afford if it were available.
OK, but you read that the guy who posted solution on reddit said he played 2h without any problem. No crashes nor graphic glitches, just stable 60 FPS on win7?
And it only takes one use of an unavailable extension to block progress in the game. They’re blocking this now for two reasons:
- It isn’t secure / relies on third party downloads. This is definitely not something they’re going to allow to continue.
- It uses a DirectX wrapper that does not contain all of the tech they use now and/or may put into a future update.
There is no benefit and every possible downside to leaving this scenario open. Your emotions don’t get to factor into this decision. This likely came down from the hacks team as something to nip in the bud immediately. That’s why we saw the unexpected last day patch to the beta client. Expect this block to be in all future clients as well.
I would see this as another example of fans fixing another game. But this attempt was blocked.
Blizzard easily could add this support for dx12 to win7 by themself, to not rely this on 3rd party. - as many developers of modern games did. - That is what I expect from this company.
Blocking working game on older OS isn’t beneficial for anybody (except maybe Microsoft).
OH wait, Microsoft actually has a guide how to support it… https://microsoft.github.io/DirectX-Specs/d3d/D3D12onWin7.html
Blizzard can’t add feature set 12_1 to Windows 7. The tools Microsoft gives only allow for 12_0, which is basically a very modest DX12 initial compatibility wrapper. And outside of a LV 10+ CVE, Microsoft isn’t releasing security updates for Windows 7 anymore either. And with the prospect of GPU vendors discontinuing support for that OS as well, game developers are sticking with what is secure and what they know will work.
This is a good place to look at the various features available on specific GPU architectures. They line up precisely with the minimum system requirements for D2R. As this is a DX12 game, it is already using D311on12 functionality within Windows 10 because the GPUs closer to the minimum spec only support feature set 11_1 and as such would be running in a runtime conversion layer already.
You’re not going to get them to make this game Windows 7 compatible. They’re hard locking it for very valid reasons. FWIW, even Steam uses D311on12 on Windows 10 for compatibility with older GPUs so players can still use the Steam Overlay.
This is one time you aren’t going to win. No amount of arguing in a circle will change Blizzard’s stance, especially if its hacks team has a say in it, which it does for this game as they want it as secure as possible.
- Do you have any source confiriming that D2R uses 12_1 feature level, not 12_0?
Strangly it worked with mentioned wrapper.
If it could stay like that - it would be enough to play on win7, still requirements could say win10+.
But now - we saw that it worked and it was locked.
So no arguments - that “we have to work a lot to make it work on win7” anymore. - I also did not see any stance from “hack team”, could you link it?
Btw, why win7 would be worry about secure issues to Blizzard’s game? Hacker’s tools exists on both systems.
The OP comes to the D3 forum to vent about D2R and W7 and never comes back. Just another cry baby.
nobody cares of beta pile of s.
Really? Seeing this thread is about a game in beta, clearly people care about betas.
WHERE ARE THE BLIZZ BLUE GUYS? Its more than disgustin to implement a BLOCK MECHANISM for windows 7 !!!
there was a solution to run it properly…then they blocked it ! pfff. seriously
You have to wake up - they cut major features from the game like TCP/IP and didn’t provide better modding support. Windows support is last thing on their imaginable list. At this point D2R is one big money grab.
im talking about unwanted pile of s. like win10-11…even the 11 in beta stage.
the matter in this d2r case (beta or not) the “solution” by blizz for win 7 as they BLOCKED it with their latest patch. it’s more than petty and disgusting, i have 2 vomit
I’m way more exited about a new OS than a face lift of a game I played to death 20 years ago.
Windows 10 is great. You just have to mod it first. Sadly the same can’t be said for D2R.
maybe i’ll make a partition for that…but jeeez, i cant accept that step from blizz (i mean the block patch).
Yes. Putting the money before your community and player base is unacceptable in any form. I thought they already learned that, but… There are very slow learners too.
It’s a business, if you believe money is not the single most important part of the equation, you’re delusional.
It’s not of course. The top priority is the longevity of the institution. Blizzard is way more than a money making machine.
It’s a business, it exists to make money. That the way to make money often coinsides with what makes the playerbase happy does not change the priorities.
For a business, that takes money above all else.
