I don’t understand why the Blizzard art team keeps making ultra flashy animations nowadays,
I’m talking about the focused target and the monsters being attacked.
In this case, I tend to prefer the way POE handles that, just a simple red line around the target, other than brightly highlighted, you still know who your target is and it doesn’t lose the authenticity of the environment visual effect on the body
In addition, when the monsters being attacked, in POE, it looks like they just get hurt, wherein D4, literally EVERY attack hits on the target makes the target flashy and bright, it is just not working if you intend to make a gory and scary game because it feels cartoonish, sure it might be the magic skill but it’s so over-used in the game IMHO, that looks really out of the place and wears out the authenticity of the atmosphere.
I agree with you, I’m only talking about the flashy part here, and also overused glowing monsters (esp in D3, heck they don’t look cool, just lazy visual effect)
Define flashy. All games have their certain "flash’ how do you think games work. D3 was great certain aspects of it certainly are. Otherwise it wouldn’t have kept going. The fact Blizzard are working on so much atm says it all they have alot to deal with. PoE is not Diablo so go fish on that one. We haven’t seen much on D4 in comparison with maps and the positive feedback of the community. Personally i am happy to pay £60 to play right now.
PoE 2 look more of the same with some slightly better models and slightly better lighting. It still looks clunky/choppy and still look exactly more of the same. Which to some that’s fine. I keep trying to get into it and I just can’t. Part if it is the clunkyness. I do like some of the things they are doing. Hopefully the campaign wont be horse pocky.
yea in d2 the monsters get lighter, brighter.
its super well done.
in d3 iirc its been a decade since i logged in i think, well the game’s only been out less than a decade but whatever, this has been brought up a bunch before how d3’s way of hovering over a monster and the like, change in animation or ‘highlighting’ its really not well done in d3.
its either it does nothing, which is bad, or its like obnoxious looking which is also bad i can’t recall which one it is. i think it’s red lines around an enemy? Which is super not as good as the monster just being brighter. this is another reason why d3’s combat isn’t fun since how targets look on the screen is part of combat.
particularly bad when fighting against a big sized target like a boss, for the player will focus on the boss the whole fight while the boss is flashy and brightly highlighted, in which way it doesn’t look ‘scary’ as it intends to, also the feeling of authenticity of the atmosphere and environment wear away, which means less vivid and engaging, I really hope they realize that.
Personally i never had problems with any ‘flashing’ of mobs. I guess it might not appear the same to everyone however i do agree the ‘flashing’ should appear more an effect of dmg type and not just a ‘flashing’ HEY LOOK IM TAKING DAMAGE flash. I never saw it like that though.
I guess we’ll see won’t we. Blizzcon this year is the big seller for D4 if it looks bad then it won’t be good. They really need to be showing good stuff rather than asking if it’s good now.
Ah yeah, I know what you mean. That beat em up flash when taking damage. So ugly and lazy. During the Blizzcon demo all of the monsters were lighting up even when they were in the dark and it totally killed their art style imo. There are so many better ways to tell the player they did damage that actually fit the mood they’re going for
It’d be nice if, by default, they had the red outline or just the effect by each class emphasizing damage on the demon. With the below examples, you can see the monster is visually blown back a bit, the spell ended where the enemy’s standing, and the spell has a hit animation/cold. How dumb are we? What more do we need ini order to realize we hit the enemy?

If we are only talking about the flash/sparks when an enemy is hit, then yes I agree, that is a bit overdone. Not so bad that it is a major turnoff, but I would like to see it toned down. It makes all enemies look like they are made of metal and we are trying to spark a fire from the sparks flying off of them.
They could also just have options. Many games in this genre have the option of the red border or no border at all when highlighting. They could do modern hit indicator, classic indicator, no indicator.
i made a comment on reddit for the white flashes o hit, under the topic for Q&A for blizzcon and it is the most liked comment by 3x, so you are not alone about this. atleast make it an option because i can really get why some people would like them to “flash” so you really know where you are hiting, but i would preffer nothing.
Also i believe d3 makes a red outline around the ones you are aiming at?
Man Idk if am the only one but Diablo 3 looked gorgeous in 2012, the scenery was really well made for that time, I mean after nearly a decade with how far graphics have came, it looks bad, but so is every old game. POE evolved a lot since it came out, but in no way does it feel to me that it comes even close to good it looks compared to D4, D4 is crispier, more artistic and has a good tone. I mean when POE first released I played it and it didn’t even look better than D3 at that time. It’s fine POE developer is a much smaller studio so in that regard its fine… remember the gameplay videos in YouTube for D4 doesn’t represent how its gonna show on your computer, these were ported out using whatever they had on the generic PCs they used on the show floor at blizzcon
that’s exactly the point, not that the idea itself is bad, well, it still depends on the execution, using some sort of visual affect for crits or some sort of subtle indication for the magic spells or such, would be fine IMO, but it’s just sooo overdone…like how they are doing the glowing eyes for the characters in WOW, it’s also ridiculously overdone
Stop with the lazy dev BS comments. Is it lazy? Do you know what goes into making that? Do you know the design philosophy behind it? Seriously, claiming lazy devs for stuff you don’t like is actually the lazy action.
It still does. Much of the negativism surrounding it is from immature edge lords afraid of color. It’s the sole reason we got whymsidale/shire. To troll those complaining about a rainbow seen over a waterfall in sunlight, you know, just like it should happen in reality. It still looks better than most ARPGs that have come out on better tech.
But D4 is miles beyond what D3 is. Graphical fidelity is way higher, lighting is much more advanced. Reflections, particle effects, and I’m sure by the time it’s ready to be tested, animations will be better too.
