I am 34 year old man and I prefer more complexity in the game. I feel like the new rune word system of cause and effect is too simple and not as fun. Who else loved ethereal items and rune words like The Dying Breath and Chains of Honor? Diablo 2 rune words gave normal items purpose, because you could make them a socketed item. I’m not saying rune words have to be identical to D2, but somethings more complex than a two-rune runewords. I remember how excited I was to get a rune that would allow me to complete a long runeword. I want that same level of excitement and joy. What do you guys think about the new Diablo 4 rune word system?
I think ebugging added excitement as well as finding great rune bases to put runewords into, finding some great bases was sometimes as fun as finding a high rune.
As for D4 runes, what’s your source? I haven’t heard anything about runes.
implement both systems from D2 and what was shown at blizzcon. What they showed at blizzcon was interesting but people also like the idea of collecting multiple smaller items that when combined create a unique/legendary item.
In regards to D4’s Runewords…
I think if they dared to bring back 6 socket items, and allowed Condition Runes to affect all socketed Effect Runes, and allowed all Effect Runes to be affected by all socketed Condition Runes…
and there were 100s of both Conditions and Effects…
You’d have an incredible foundation for complexity and build diversity.
Rhykker interview with one of the devs. Check it out on his youtube channel.
This is my idea from another post. Build-your-own runewords, basically:
- White items can have up to 3 sockets.
- Blue items can have up to 2 sockets.
- Rare and up one socket only.
- Each rune has an effect;
- Each sequential rune pair on an item has an effect.
Example:
- 3 socket white armor;
- “A” rune with fire resistance;
- “B” rune with cold resistance;
- “C” rune with increased defense;
Let’s say I add them in ABC order on my armor, my item would become:
- Fire resistance (from A)
- Cold resistance (from B)
- Increased armor (from C)
- Half frozen duration (From AB)
- Chance to cast ice nova when struck (From BC)
I feel like this could make it into a interesting and highly variable system.
What are you smoking lol, you lost me.
Sounds interesting, but still pretty simplified comparing to old D2 runewords.
For example why limit to 3 sockets and not to 6?
Depending item slot sockets should vary, like a weapon should have up to 6 sockets while a shield and armor 4 sockets total and helm 3 sockets total.
That should sound more interesting but imo i would still prefer the old system as runes being hard to get crafting materials to power up socketed items with unique perks.
ok boomer
no rlly u are right xD
i was thinking about a system with different socket numbers and all different kinds of rune combinations create a different effect that you will see before you forge it
like that, you can have 1000 of different smaller and bigger runewords and rlly have a lot to discover
or maybe, some runes dont even work together
so the really important difference to D2 runewords would be, that you see, whats going to happen
using an online wiki rlly isnt improving gameplay xD
That’s what the current version of D4’s runes are:
2 Socket Items for 1 Condition Rune + 1 Effect Rune
Example:
Condition: Use a potion
Effect: Gain 15% increased damage for 10s
Makes it so every time you use a potion, you get 15% increased damage for 10s
I’m saying, they should open the sockets back up to 6 so you can have multiple Conditions and Effects – and to make sure there are tons of Conditions and Effects to choose from.
It would make for more build variety and complexity
Limiting the number of sockets mostly to have a balance from number of modifiers, some runewords from D2 were really ridiculous I dare say.
But depending on the number of modifiers on rares/legendaries sure we could have items with more sockets.
One idea that surged was having an mythic item without any effects, just a large number of sockets.
Complexity according to some: Jah + Ith + Ber = item that breaks the game and makes your barb teleport around as if it makes sense
Complexity in real life: Having to make decisions on what way runes could complement your build in a unique way, therefore the “cause and effect” nature of D4’s runes offers more variety.
There is only one way to place runes in new system. Cause always comes before effect. Legendaries with sockets automatically become a better item and everything else that doesn’t have sockets becomes trash. Thats why rune words should be separate from legendaries.
unless you can craft sockets into the item
No one’s asking for Enigma to return. Nothing ridiculous like that.
Yeah, sounds fair.
Let for example Mythic items have no sockets, since they will be the strongest items in the game.
The problem lies within legendary/unique items.
Blizz claimed they wanted to make them really strong (not so fond of that idea tbh) but if we ever let them say for example for game balance 1 socket its useless since you need at least 2 sockets to be able to trigger the effect of runes (condition + effect) which seems to be too op tbh, even if “lower tier” items (magic rares) get more max sockets.
Unless there is some balance with the triger effect with the runes within, but this would get even more complex to balance.
Therefore items with 1 socket would be not an option, and overall generally more sockets in the game would seem like a wiser idea.
Youp thinking the same…current D4 runeword system is to simple to be satisfying.
A bit more complexity wouldn’t be bad.
Don’t be afraid to give things more depth Blizzard, your playerbase can handle it.
Boomers are roughly between 55 and 73 years of age. The OP is a spry 34. If he’s lucky he has quite a bit of Gen X in him as, alas, comments resulting in ‘okay boomer’ gaslighting were born by apathetic Millenials or Gen Z(ero) kiddies.
Just a little public service announcement.
To OP: I’m with you on complexity but that should carry over to ‘play style’, not gear/augments/etc. I mean, the harder we make the game the less it can be botted and the sense of achievement becomes all the more palpable.
Oh, on my we would go back to having the old times of runes with an complete effect, so rares/uniques/sets with sockets could apply a rune for a buff but wouldn’t be able to make runewords.
i hope you read the rest of my comment dude xD
