Your title is a bit click-baity. I’m sorry to say so, but this job opening isn’t “to monetise the game”. It’s a job opening where one of the numerous requirements of the applicant is to manage that part of the game.
I understand and recognize Diablo 4 must be profitable going forward. That’s what gaming companies expect. I dont object to MTX, as long as my game is being further developed and you can’t pay-to-win (which is why I’m against open trading, too.)
That they want a Business manager type role, is a given. That is required for any game.
They appear to have not even defined how they plan to set up their business model and want someone experienced in developing approaches.
This would include EVERY thing related to the game that might generate revenue, including initial games sales, promotions, licensing for merch, etc.
I see no reason to be worried based on the job posting. There is nothing scary here. Just a desire to generate income from a product they sell (however they decide to sell it).
I am deeply suspicious of anything “free”. Everything has a catch, even if it is just a marketing ploy. I am a bit of an old curmudgeon though. I have been told forever nothing in life is free.
I was just poking Avalon for what seems a bit of an inflammatory thread topic when reality is “duh they want to get paid for work”. Did he think people would be upset that a game has a business model?
I don’t think anyone is expecting D4 to be free. Hence why they mentioned cosmetics for players and mounts. Are we going to be told soon if there is going to be a monthly subscription?
The only question would be how much mtx can we expect? Based on what was said at blizzcon, the mtx would be mostly, if not completely, cosmetic goods with little impact on gameplay. However, considering that Diablo 4 won’t be released anytime soon, that, like nearly everything else, is subject to change.
No, they already said Diablo 4 base game will cost money. From that point we can pay extra for:
Subscription models
DLCs
MTXs
How they are going to monetize the game further is interesting to see since this intervenes with the development of the game too. Such job posting now also indicate that we will have an answer about these questions at the virtual Blizzcon in early 2021.
I doubt it. We still don’t have the business model for Diablo Immortal. They will wait until much closer to release to finalize the D4 model.
So many laws change every year regarding games, what is considered gambling, what apps can be used in what countries, etc etc. Makes more sense to have a general idea, and save the details for later once all the analysts and lawyers have been through them.
