The majority of items can drop anywhere with some that can only be found in a certain areas. It gives motive to farm different areas and bosses.
Examples
Bosses: Diablo, Baal, Duriel, etc.
Each boss will have different legendaries or misc items that can only drop from killing them.
Minibosses: Bishibosh, Rakanishu, Griswold, Fire Eye, etc.
Each miniboss will have different legendaries or misc items that can only drop from killing them.
Regions: Scoslgen, Dry Steppes, Kehjistan, Fractured Peaks, Hawezar.
Each region will have different legendaries or misc items that can only drop from killing monsters or opening chests in that region.
Monster Families: Fallen, Cannibal, Drowned, etc.
Certain legendaries or misc items can only drop from killing any monster in that family. Monster families could also have a higher chance of dropping certain types of items. The Cannibal family could have a higher chance to drop melee weapons, or the Fallen family could have a higher chance to drop items with fire damage/resistance.

No dedicated drops please, that’s just unnecessary. Farming something specific to get something specific is archaic.
Now I wouldn’t object increased chances of certain items dropping from certain monsters/bosses/areas/etc. This way one can play any content without feeling that he/she would not be able to get all items.

There should be no dedicated drops imo. Let RNG be RNG.
However it would be okay if some bosses etc. has higher chances to drop specific items. So Baal might have a legendary that has significantly higher drop chance from him than other enemies. Same for Cannibals, same for specific regions. That would still encourage farming specific stuff.
But everything should have some potential to drop anywhere. Anything else just limits peoples options in end-game, and reduces the joy of getting positively surprised by item drops.

Just no. If you like that kind of junk so much go play D2.
I don’t like how D2 restricts certain drops only to certain bosses and areas. You should be able to get everything everywhere. However, I do agree that certain locations or monsters could have increased chance for certain item affixes or even items. Like, if I need something badly, I can choose to go there to raise my chances, instead of going to Auction House to buy it, simply because RNG god doesn’t give me that.

Agree with op, limitations force players to get creative and makes things fun.

I posted something a while back about maybe specific items drop in specific zines and random works enemies would have a lower drop rates, world elites higher, zone dungeon enemies a bit higher, and zone bosses having the highest drop rate.
It wouldn’t be like no other items drop but zone items just maybe a specific set of items related to zone lore or something. Maybe a specific legendary or mythic for each class. That way you would need to farm the Drowned Queen over and over, you may get it off dungeon mobs leading up to her, or while out gathering crafting materials.
But in general, specific loot tied to bosses is bad.

Farming the same spot over and over again just to get one item is boring as hell. That is unless you love farming bounties to get RoRG or Avarice Band.
I remember this being a big thing in D2. I Don’t know if I can say a big, thing I just remember the endless Baal runs. If it was just me or not I don’t know, however I do like the sound of items not being connected to the same bosses. I also feel the extremely high end tier items need to be rewarded at a risk or a challenge. And making them non tradeable as much as people don’t like the sound of it, it will be a good thing minimising the use of bots etc. Another thing I most certainly do not miss from D2 was the fact that when you did defeat bosses in a team all the items were ‘auto’ gone lol (you know what I mean if you played it). I welcomed the change in D3 of items being dropped to each account playing. As for D4: There’s not a lot on items at the moment (other than the mention and sight of minimal runes/runewords) but personally out of all the legionaries shown so far (which i’m sure there are a lot more) I really only liked the look of one, possibly two of them. I really do welcome the open world aspect and can’t wait to see more on items/itemisation.

I’d agree with others that I don’t want to fully locked to a certain boss, but having certain bosses or areas have a drastically increased drop rate for certain items would give reason to visit more areas.
and it would also let players better target very specific items that they want for their build, which is going to be important if we’re not going to be able to trade the highest quality items in the game.
