Diablo 4 for Apple/Mac users

Blizzard is steadily dropping games and support for Apple. Overwatch and D2R are examples - Windows ONLY ! Don’t expect Diablo 4 to be available om Mac’s ! So we’re screwed!

Not to take your concerns lightly, but if there is money to be made by supporting Apple, you can bet they would support Mac’s. Personally I like gaming on window based PC’s, but I’m sure some would disagree.

There isn’t.

When it comes to gaming, Mac users represent such a tiny fraction of the total playerbase that it simply isn’t worth the effort. If the expenses are too high compared to the potential profit, why bother creating and supporting a version with such low amount of users?

Macs can run Windows.

Yes, but would you want to?

Yes, and I do.

It also runs a few Linux distros I don’t want a completely separate physical machine for.

Just by pure curiosity Mouse. Do you play D3 on a Mac? And does it run smoothly? I know there are some backwards compatibility issues with Macs (newer Macs running older windows games) that’s why I ask.

I do (2020 intel macbook pro, in macOS Monterey, not a Windows VM), and it runs fine with whatever settings i throw at it, up to 4k. I usually play at 1440p, 60fps, vsync on.

One of the challenges upcoming is that Apple is moving everything to their own silicon - currently called the ‘M1’ and it’s family, and that seems to be the nail on the coffin for Blizzard with regards to Mac Games.

And, even though many macs out there don’t have the M1 processor, I think they are using this as a time to end support period. At that time, any non M1 computers will be legacy, will slowly lose support from Apple and are not worth investing in. Software companies typically want to be forward-thinking, not legacy-serving.

With regards to Boot Camp, that will go away with the migration to M1.

I’m sad about this too. As I’ve always been on a Mac myself at home. But, it will be time to find another entertainment outlet at that time.

I do not play on Mac frequently as I have grown accustomed to using a controller and prefer console for that reason, but when I do, I have not experienced issues. I have tried in both native Mac OS and Windows with Windows performing better overall (at least, less hassle.)

You are super late to this bogus hate train. Your blame should be directed towards apple for making it difficult for developers to make games for Macs.

The latest version of Parallels I believe is Apple Silicon compatible, so it should not be an issue to run a Windows program (D4) on an Apple Silicon Mac.

Not quite accurate. Parallels does indeed run on M1. But, it will not run a Windows x86 VM. It can run a VM with Windows for Arm. The problem is that there is no legal way to get a Windows for Arm license outside of purchasing a Windows Arm device.

Even if that were not the case, performance of games in Windows VMs is abysmal.

I finally bit the bullet and built myself a Windows gaming rig, even though I prefer my MacBook Pro for everything else.

It’s less about money and more about what Apple has and has not done to/for/with developers. It’s all been hashed out before but the bottom line here is that Apple betrayed Blizzard and many other game developers on multiple fronts over the last few years and they aren’t happy about it. As such, new games won’t appear on macOS anytime soon.

D3 runs playably in 10.13.6 (High Sierra). Anything past that though has major issues ranging from stuttering to full-on graphical issues, and often both. Apple hasn’t fixed the AMD driver bugs and will never fix the Intel IGP bugs in their drivers. When a machine stops shipping and has reached EOL at the retail level Apple no longer provides bugfixes outside of something that breaks the OS as a whole on those machines. It’s why I’ve moved to Windows 10 on my hackintosh when playing D3. At least there I don’t get the problems found in macOS. I’d play WoW in Windows 10 as well if it weren’t for a lack of focus lock and the built in controller configuration being half-baked command line only at the moment.

D3 runs fine on my iMac, but it’s a 2020 expensive machine, so I wouldn’t expect it to be a problem.

Playing on a Mac though brings up an annoying delayed update on stash tabs and inventory when you play though, which really becomes a bother after a while. Sometimes you have the stash open for 10 - 15 seconds before items start appearing, for example.

As I boot camp the machine with Win 10 anyway, I’ve recently taken to just playing D3 on the windows boot up instead.

Oh no. Not that 1% of the gaming population.

How ever will Blizzard recover?

POE runs fine as do some other games on my iMac OS 12.3.1 . D3 having is issues is the programmers fault because they can’t code !!
