Diablo 4 design team REALLY like brown

Just had a read of the quarterly update - boy is the character sheet brown. Everything is just a shade of brown.

I know D4 is going for a gritty feel, but do you really need to be so literal with the dirt colours?

The demo seemed too muddy to me as well. They want it gritier and I guess they think that means devoid of color for some reason. Maybe it’s just too much Bloom FX? IDK. Some people like it. :man_shrugging:t2:

Its dull.
Dull is the best adjective

Brown Grey Tans faded sun-blasted, it looks really poor choice of color.

See they didnt understand D2 in an extreme detail way, why we like it so much, and thought ā€œdarkā€ is this keyword to over-latch onto, instead of simply asking us and listening to experienced-feedback.

It’s so embarassing.
So, that’s why you see all this dull color scheme, it’s basically saying "hey we dont really know d2, but we think that ā€œdarkā€ is what mattered from D2, and this is our attempt to ā€œbring back d2ā€ by making this game ā€œdarkā€ in our eyes, which is actually dull in everyone else’s eyes.

Unfortunately, they have taken after D3 in almost all choices, even tho they said ā€œwere listening and D2 mattersā€. They said one thing, then didn’t listen to our feedback.

They think we want ā€œdarkā€ and ā€œonly darkā€ instead of ā€œnot darkā€ and ā€œtake after D2 where it’s smart to do soā€.

They probably have a marker board, well no bc it’s 2020, but if they did it would say ā€œDarkā€ at the top like this magic keyword. Instead it should say ā€œD2ā€ and then ā€œthose devs knew how to target the not-meta, not-youtube marketā€.

Which means there’s clearly nothing smart to copy from D2, deer.

Nah, u just didnt grow up on D2 and understand a lot of it, beneath the meta-surface, and so, you bash D2 bc you grew up on D3. Study D2 sometime, for a few years, then write back.

People needs to realize that this demo was just…a very, very early demo. Why? Because they had nothing to show in 2018 Blizzcon and they did ā€œeverythingā€ to show something at Blizzcon 2019. It was not a bad demo, but it shows that they didn’t really had time to work on it like they should do.

Remember first show of D3 in 2008? I do. When it released in 2012 it was a complete different game, with a lot better graphics and such. Same will happen to D4.

But in the end, what it really matters is the gameplay.

I am okay with it. I am sick of all these bright child games. Please bring back the scary darkness into the diablo franchise

Not only that, the area was a coastal, overcast area devoid of bright light. Of course it wasn’t going to look as good as say the other zones shown off in the gameplay trailer that weren’t overcast.

On top of that, Blizzard has a defined vision for the style which is reminiscent of renaissance art, specifically the ones made for the game, which are flat to begin with. One does not have to like the direction, but it fits the theme they are going for.

The colors palette seems right to me, gaming engines have grown up since D2.
What I have seen from the Dry Steppes looks way better than Lut Gholein, this area is also quite gorgeous the night. Regarding ā€˜ā€˜Dark’’, shades & lightning effect really worth a price, it almost gives the feel of a black and white horror movies.

I agree that the D2 team really scored high, I believe that the pre-RoS D3 team had no clue about the meaning of Dark Fantasy, but looks to me that the D4 team is on the right track.
Monsters, playable characters, critters & beast, biomes, … the art of Diablo has never been that detailed, and what we saw was only a quick built demo.

I understand that some players are harder to please, when it’s about technicalities and customization, I am VERY hard to satisfied.
D3 brought few good things but my level of disappointment toward it is higher than the fun I had with this chapter, from this I’m forced to have D1 & D2 as a reference when I want to talk about the franchise.

You can’t satisfy every player with the colors. Maybe a color picker MTX for the UI is coming, who knows?

Yes, the game looks amazing to me.

I didn’t mind D3’s richer color palette, or even the lighter tone over-all, and was honestly surprised at the back-lash after the 2008 reveal. D3 couldn’t be anything less than brazen and spectacular, that was just the climate at the time.

It makes total sense to me that this part of the world would be largely brown and bleak. At the same time, it is beautiful with the backdrop showing distance and height of the land, the shrubbery being different shades and the enemies feeling like they belong. So far I am mostly loving the look of Diablo 4. It is somewhat painterly, yet also fairly realistic, detailed, and grim. My biggest issue with any visuals I have seen thus far, is the monster abilities such as the ice crystals spawning around them randomly and blowing up. It looks like it was copy and pasted from Diablo 3 and feels a bit out of place.

Exactly. They color and art style is directly modeled after renaissance paintings which are flat and desaturated. It was a major point the devs made at Blizzcon yet goes completely ignored and treated as if the devs don’t know what they are doing.

It reminds me of people critical of the Skyward Sword art style. It was made to look like and impressionistic painting. They nailed it, but people thought it was a blurry mess.

I actually think they’ve done a pretty decent job of adding in a lot of carefully placed colours to the game.

I get that it’s going to look quite brown when viewing the default models wearing leather armour or bear hides but those things just are brown. Also dirt is brown and typically if you go exploring the world you’ll come across it a lot.

I think the idea is that using brown as a base allows all the other colours to pop when they happen.

I think it’s trying to keep the interface from being more visually aggressive than the game effects so you can focus on the game more.

This may also allow for some nice contrast when we go to Heaven and Hell, they will likely have more aggressive palettes.

Given that Diablo 4 is supposed to contain a much larger portion of the world than previous games, I would hope they have more varied environments.

I’d also hope they include better graphics options so I can fix that the game’s colours all look washed out.

Not that I doubt you that there has been another quarterly update, which seems kind of odd that it is way before the end of the month. But since I haven’t seen it mind giving me a link so I can see what all of you are talking about.

Did you intentionally ignore the WORK IN PROGRESS written in the bottom left?

I read somewhere that you shouldn’t wear brown clothes. because people subconsciously link color with something else. :leg: :dash: :poop:
I think brown is ideal for d4. it is best to color diablo immortal completely in brown too.
p.s .: Wash hands thoroughly after playing!
