First time playing, first run, been really struggling on defeating Diablo himself, that apocalypse spell he does is OP and kills me within moments of every save point. I’ve already lost my Arkains Valor armour to his damage and quickly losing all my money on mana potions…If I can escape for long enough. Any tips? Also, does he regenerate health at all?
Yeah, instead of posting in the Diablo III forums about this, post it into the classic games forums…

Duly noted. I’ll look there.
The Classic Games forum is really for games Blizz still supports. They had GoG games do the Diablo 1 stuff.
They DO have a forum though! You might find other current D1 players there.
Thanks, although my hopes aren’t high for defeating this guy. So hard.
I’ve already answered you in your Classic Games Diablo 1 Question thread.
Thanks, although there’s no way I could do the same thing with my sorcerer. He’d chew me up with or without the mana shield in in three seconds.
I understand.
Heheh. Yeah. The trick is keeping range, managing the charges on your staff, lots of mana, and keeping an eye on monster resistances. Although apparently I missed out on a couple of key spells like energy sheild and apocalypse and teleport. All of which would have helped me loads. I’d also have put more points into vitality.
Did you go after Diablo without properly gearing first?
As a Sorcerer you should have a high level Mana Shield and a high level Holy Bolt… as well as decent Resistances.
Well, I wasn’t sure how to go about doing that. I’d killed all the other monsters and constantly checked the vendors. Found out I can start a new game with the same stats as and spells as before so going to try that. Feels like cheating though.
Heh. Did you try and go straight through all 16 levels in 1 game?
You are absolutely supposed to start new games. Lots of them. This is how you find a lot of your Books, like Mana Shield and Stone Curse and Golem - from constantly restarting and checking Adria, and reclearing Catacombs. Unless they changed something, I don’t think books drop in the Hell levels at all, and not often in Caves. You’re gonna need Mana Shield at a high level if you’re a Sorcerer or Rogue since every levels reduces the costs.
That’s how you find gear on vendors and get something good from Wirt because that’s the easiest way to reset vendor inventories.
In fact, it’s not even necessary to kill Diablo before you raise the difficulty. I used to start doing Nightmare as soon as I hit level 21 or so.
How did you think multiplayer worked? Can’t save those games to the individual.
That’s nothing. Back in the late 90s when I first played it, I ran laps around the Butcher’s room with the beast in hot pursuit. I was spamming Stone Curse scrolls like crazy and whacking him from a healthy distance with my trusty Bow of Accuracy.
Thanks. Wasn’t aware of this. Heheh. Yeah I did. The progression felt it had a good pace and I managed to clear all the levels with what I had in front of me. You say raise the difficulty? How do you do that? I see no difficulty option?
It’s not. It’s a feature built into the game. I never liked doing The Butcher on my first run-through. He is fast and hits hard. Because of this, it’s easy for him to put you in a state of Hit Recovery… repeatedly. And then, all you can do is sit there and watch him kill you.
I would run Level 1 a few times before I felt ready to continue on the Level 2. I did the same for Level 3 and The Skeleton King. After that, you should be able to proceed normally. And whenever you feels things are getting a little tough, repeat your current Level until you feel comfortable moving on.
In Single Player, you have many Quests you can do. But, there is only Normal Difficulty. As you stated, there’s no option to change Game Difficulty.
In Multi Player, there’s only 4 Quests. And you have the option to play on Normal Difficulty, Nightmare Difficulty or Hell Difficulty.
But, there is a trick to playing Single Player on higher Game Difficulties.
- First, you need a Multi Player Character that can enter all three Game Difficulties. That would take creating a Multi Player Character and getting them to clvl (Character Level) 30. (If I remember correctly: It takes clvl 17 to enter Nightmare Difficulty and clvl 30 to enter Hell Difficulty).
- Start the game and select your Multi Player Character.
- Select Nightmare Difficulty or Hell Difficulty and start the game.
- Once your Multi Player Character is in town, bring up the Game Menu and click New Game.
- Back out of the Menu until you can select Single Player. DO NOT EXIT THE GAME.
- Select your Character and start your game.
When your Character enters their Single Player game, they will be in the Game Difficulty you selected with your Multi Player Character. And it will remain this way until you exit the game.
Note: I’m not sure you can do this in GOG’s version. But, I would tend to think you can.
Good luck and good hunting!
I don’t know if this will help or if you’re even interested, but I video captured every Diablo Quest in Single Player. If you would like to check them out, you can find them here:
Enjoy.
