D4 should not be exactly like d2

I love D2 and played it as much as I could back in the day and on and off throughout the years, but I fail to understand why some people here want Diablo 4 to be a clone of D2.

Diablo 2 did a lot of things right but it did a ton of things wrong. The balance between classes was non existent and everyone pretending that the others were at the same level as paladins or sorcs are lying to themselves. Once you reach a certain level you either hunt for the rarest of items or do endless levelling runs in the same area.

With that being said, Diablo has to evolve and gaming now is way different than it was then back in 98,99. The game, especially at endgame has to keep people involved and challenged. Try to have an open mind about the changes coming to diablo 4

The most thread asking about D2 vs others is mostly centered around itemization, I prefer D4 be it’s own game but the direction of an improved D3 loot model worries me a bit.

I agree the loot model needs to change, but I do support a semi open world and world bosses. I think many people here are afraid of d4 turning into a wow lite

I too was very concerned about shared open world. It was the ā€˜shared’ part that bothered me. Too many other folks running about ruins the dark horror immersion. After watching the panels, the developers shared this concern, their vision seems to be something that can be viable (for me) - time will tell. My main concern now is the loot model, it seems to be improved over D3 but it appears like will still be too simplistic. I’m awaiting further progress to see how it ends up.

What changes? They literally re-skinned Diablo III and changed greater rifts to be lower quality of life. They added trading for low quality garbage items that no one would ever even care about wanting. They kept the bind on equip crap for the best gear in the game to prevent people selling items for real money.

There’s not much of a difference here in game play between D3 and D4 from what I’ve seen so far… and the legendary items may be improved a bit like the Stone of Jordan but meh… I can see the end game being ridiculous trying to hunt down the best possible gears for your build.

Considering how much they patch and nerf D3 builds in to the ground every 3 months, it almost makes me want to just beat the campaign and quit.

It is still very very early in the development cycle. They have time to fix itemization. Gameplay wise its very different, the pacing is more akin to d2 and not going as fast as you can through mobs like it is in d3 currently.

D2 had its problems for sure. The other classes in d2 besides Paladin and Sorc had their own places in the world to shine. The Paladin was pretty much ran as Hammerdin we all know that because no monster had resistance to the holy magic, except in baal wave 2 throne room. The Sorc had its time to shine when the conviction aura could be placed on mecenary to strip the resistance away to blast with lightning.

Ever tried a WC barb? Elemental Druid? Trapsin? Javazon? Paladin and Sorc arent always the best. The Sorc was the cheapest to gear up and find runes / uniques due to the class had teleport.

The thing people want from Diablo 2 to come over to Diablo 4 is the itemization that it had. I have a strong feeling Diablo 4 will be stacking Attack speed, Crit chance and Crit hit damage once again and with a twist of slotting in runes to have special attributes to boost crit chance or damage.

I can agree with this. The itemization of d2 was very good and I would like to get away from d3 itemization

Javazon, elemental Druid, Trap Assassin, Jump and whirlwind Barb, necro sucked, ok. But man, what are you talking about !? All of these classe’s build 1 shotted everything, balance wasn’t perfect but it was Good !!!

I prefer almost everything Build wise, item wise from Diablo 2… the only thing i enjoyed more about Diablo 3 is the Monsters… there was alot more and you killed more stuff.
They should get all the items, runewords, skills, stats from Diablo 2… and get all the action from Diablo 3 !!!

Edit : The only thing i see you could be talking about in ā€œnot balancedā€ is because alot of people used SORC to power level (teleport) or the hammerdin pally (less monster resisted to them) But they were all great in their own ways ( PVP was awesome )

great in their own ways ok but tell me you start out a new ladder with anything other than a sorceress are you going to be able to catch up with others wealthwise? Highly doubtful. The game forced you to use that class just to gather a pool of uniques

Depends on HOW you want to play the game !! if you don’t try to always be the first one to get to the top. but yet this is YOUR way to play the game, you were not forced, just like characters had their OWN way of being good !!!

It’s been 7 years since D3’s release and 5 years since RoS. If they didn’t realize the fundamental problems with their itemization design after this long then they aren’t going start doing full conceptual redesigns now that its in major development.

Same, same. I wishope that they listen and develop a loot and stat system more akin to Diablo 2 than Diablo 3, but certainly not a clone of D2. Inspiration, spirit, and theme, sure, but exercise your creative muscles and give us something modern that allows deep customization and archetype building.

I made a post with some of my thoughts: Diablo 4: Don't Mimic D3 Loot
