For the people who don’t want free unlimited respecs then how the skill system works exactly doesn’t matter a whole lot.
The argument against it is that having a player make a choice then letting them change said choice any time they want undermines the point of having a choice in the first place.
What you end up with is a World of Warcraft like system where you’re not building a character based on your playstyle, but rather based on what is optimal for the current content you’re running. That becomes the way they need to balance the game, unless they’re also planning on making the game very easy so your build almost just doesn’t matter.
but as I’ve argued on the WoW forums, a respec limit doesn’t need to be all that harsh. All it really need to do is keep the average player from being able to respec 6 times a day every day.
A currency cost would be more than sufficient, and if somebody wants to farm up a ton of currency that’s not much of a concern.
