[D4] Mounts how do they work?

I do not have any experience with mounts so how do they work? They said that mounts cannot take damage however if they are hit we must dismount and engage. They also said that horseshoes will do different things.

This is what I do not understand how do we activate the mounts? Are the mounts always with us? If I do not want to use a mount early on will I have an option not to use them? If we are on a mount and decide to go into a dungeon will the mount just disappear and reappear when we go back outside? Are the mounts going to replace the pets and followers? I do not recall seeing any skills or talents tied to mounts (I could be wrong).

Maybe it will work like Heroes of the Storm, and FF14 where you can summon mount from thin air anytime you wanted as long as you don’t get hit or interrupted by the monsters.

This is how FF14 mount was summoned:

From what’s been shown and told to us:

  • mounts are completely optional and you’d likely can play the entire game without needing to ever use them (albeit with some efficiency lost). Similar to being able to play Diablo 3 without being required to use the pet.
  • Horse Shoes will apparently affect the speeds the speed of your mount. However, there may be others that adds some visual affects.

Also as you said, mounts can’t be harmed, but we can be forcibly dismounted from them if we’re attacked while riding, for example:
(19 minute and 31 second mark to see player forcibly dismounted)

As for:

  • Q. How do we summon them?

  • A. It’s either an instantaneous summon, like the video Kilometer had linked. Or we call for them and they ride into our view where we could then mount them. I’m thinking it’ll be the latter based on this portion of the video:

(17 minute and 10 second mark to see potential mounting)

  • Q. Are they always with us?
  • A. Only when summoned, which is likely done with a hotkey command (that is also likely adjustable).

  • Q. Will mounts mounts disappear when we go into dungeons?
  • A. Assuming that mounts aren’t usable in dungeons, then yes that’s the likely scenario

  • Q. Are mounts going to replace pets and/or followers?
  • A. Doubtful, considering that mounts will serve a completely different purpose in comparison to pets or followers.
Pets pretty much collect nearby gold for players, while followers/mercenaries assist players during combat and engage enemies. Mounts will do neither of which as the developers stated that they have no intentions of horse combat (or jousting) in Diablo 4. Now that’s not to say that I believe 100% that both pets and followers are in Diablo 4 (I do hope for it, but that’s about it); only that I doubt mounts will replace pets or followers in terms of capability.

With all that said, I now wonder if the campaign will have cutscenes that involve our mounts (like us riding them to somewhere or even trying to escape a horde of demons), if so it could be hilarious to see especially with the different breeds of mounts that we can attain.

It was also said, that mounts can wear different armor types. And that we can hang trophies on them to show other players our pvp successes.

Maybe we can benefit from mount-gear while pvp too. From horse-armor for not being dismounted from other player, from the boots to engage or escape faster.

I think, now is here in the thread all said what is still known about mounts.

Maybe i should add that it was mentioned, that mounts would look dark&gore-like and we don’t have to care about an immersive break (from white ponys or stuff like that i could imagine).

That would be great actually, why do you say “hilarious” ? Same as hkmaximus, I heard they intended to keep mounts in the tone of Diablo (Blizzcon 2019, main panel) so I don’t think we’ll ever risk to see anything goofy. Especially since people are quite wary about the shared world populated with others.

Pay it no mind, I have an odd sense of humor.

^^
I guess seeing a headless horse in an otherwise serious cinematic could trigger some laugh.

The mounts are there so everyone has a speed option. Or, so the other 3 can keep up with the meta speed build carrying the group.

I’m assuming it’s much like WoW and is just a travel perk, and you’ll get dismounted if you get attacked by anything I reckon, if you have a damage shield up maybe you’ll stay mounted, not sure how they’ll work the combat part?

Crusaders/Paladin’s, I would hope anyway, get extra mount perks, as the class has a tight relationship with mounts, you already see it with the Crusader talents in D3, not sure to what extent though, in WoW for example a Paladin gets a 20% mounted speed bonus.

I guess it offers a new reward path to go down also, so another collection to work on!
