[D4] Follower or pet?

They have not said anything about followers or pets, so which one would you prefer?

  1. A follower that you can gear out, but unlike in D3 this follower can actually do damage at higher levels. He/she would also have a larger pool of skills to pick from and special gear and gems. You could also determine if the follower was defensive or offensive in nature. You basically create your own follower.

Or

  1. A pet that has some type of special abilities depending on which one you pick. Let’s say an ice hound that does cold damage and increases your cold resistance and life regeneration. He can also pick up two items for you. You can pick which items you want him to pick up, but you cannot change them. Different pets can do different things. You can only have one active at a time. But you can change them whenever you want.

Update: The pet does not have any gear. Only 3 abilities and 2 pick up options.

Since the pet would actually be able to deal damage, I wouldn’t mind either. However for the sake of customization, I’d probably lean towards having a customizable Follower/Merc who can be built to actually deal noticable damage and/or serve as a tank for squishy players.

I don’t see why a distinction necessarily need be made, as a pet could get equipment, in theory.

I think pickable pets like torchlight would kinda devalue classes like the druid so mercs is probably the better fit for diablo

Nah pets are for pet classes. Make a mix of the folowers of D3 and mercenary of D2. So No.1. please and thank you.

I know that some people do not want to click on items on the ground, all they care about is speed. So, the pet might work for them. I do not have any issues with picking up items, it is part of the game. So, a follower that could help me tool out demons would be the way to go. I wonder if the mounts will replace pets and followers.

Pet. Never liked followers/mercenaries. I never used them after the first one died begrudgingly used them in D3 because of their talents and now the other bonuses after the rework. I wouldn’t even want my pet doing damage, rather, they can be a item mule like in TL.

This. Very much this.

True.

Agreed.
Also, while I dont care for the whole “Return to Darkness” stuff in D4, paying a mercenary to fight for you seems a lot more like that, than having an pet do your bidding, including picking up stuff for you, despite not having any summoning/pet training skills.

A merc could also pick up items for you. That is the nice thing about mercs. They will probably sing and dance for you, as long as you are paying.

It really should not be possible to automatically pick up items however.

I guess they could let the merc go back to town to sell items for you however. They would of course take part of the profit.

The follower is just a glorified pet that looks like a human instead of an animal or inanimated object.

Also, I think D4 shouldn’t have a follower system because they can never get it right. D3 followers are the best example here.

People want D3 followers to deal real damage but all we got is a support-type follower that can’t deal real damage. It was pretty obvious that the Diablo team thinks that followers should never deal a real damage like player character.

It’s almost certain that D4 will have cosmetic pets to sell in the shop.

I hope D4 has mercenaries that actually do damage. One idea that people suggested for D3 that I really like would be the ability to use one of your other characters as a merc. Though my personal preference would be to have actual characters with their own stories like Kormac, Lyndon and Erina, but that had a playable class that you could fully equip.

They did say you can get some cosmetics with the shards in the fields of hatred. But they have never said anything about pets or followers. Instead of always telling us that D4 will be dark, I would like some light on other subjects.

They did say that Diablo 4 will have (or at least planned to have) mtx. They also said that they won’t sell power, so I think it’s safe to say that some cosmetics, such as pets, mounts, wings (yes, I know some players hate this, I’m simply listing it), and transmogrifications will be available for players to obtain via mtx.

They’ve already confirmed cash shop mounts (I think), I wouldn’t get my hopes up that Blizzard won’t want to make money.

Expect crap like respec pots in the cash shop too.

I sure wouldn’t buy the game then. But yeah, wouldn’t be too surprised if it happened.

Pets are basically guaranteed.
Of course, mercs gives them yet another cosmetic to sell… get the plain looking mercenary, or buy the cool one

I wouldn’t worry much about respec potions, since from the way they worded it; it’ll be something that players can do with in-game activity.

That would not exactly prevent them from also selling respecs at MTX.
But hopefully they are not that stupid.

Oh, I bet the only reason D4 is going to have respec limits is to have respec pots in the cash shop.

Well it likely wouldn’t as you say, however at the very least it’ll be something also available for in-game. On the other hand, a worse thing I could imagine that they could put behind mtx, could be additional build slots that players can switch between.

Actually Diablo 4 will allow for unlimited respecs.

None for me, but if I had to choose it would be mercenary/follower. It’s a Diablo hallmark and I don’t see what the pet feature would do different.
I’m even wary of pets as pure cosmetics, seeing how wrong it went down in D3.
