The 5 starter classes are revealed and this may be a unpopular opinion but the 5 classes seem closer aligned towards evil then against it. Obviously my main has been Paladin and Crusader and I relate with them more as they tend to be a light against the darkness. I have no issue with the classes coming but I’m really gonna be missing that Holy Warrior class, hopeful that’s a new class coming in the future.
I’d agree with you aside from the Druid. Aren’t druids usually nature loving hippies basically? I don’t really see them as “evil” in anyway.
No. They’re still fighting evil; they’re just not doing it by being real shiny.
The real world druids were pretty into human sacrifice, if that counts.
That’s true I didn’t think about that. I was mainly just thinking about modern day fantasy and how Druids are usually portrayed. But yeah, you’re right!
Dang, I guess we all our kind of bad in a way lol
Pretty much this. Evil is still being fought, however the methods of fighting may not be as righteous as it was before. That’s how much of a mess the world is in.
I think a new fad is to have all heroes be anti-heroes in some capacity. And like we saw with this Skarn character, he had some twisted altruistic motivation. Sounds like they’re going to try to blend the lines between good and evil and “make us think”. The Thanos dynamic.
I actually think that guiding principle is illustrative of how their in real life philosophies are. I guess that’s how they sleep at night while trying to manipulate and deceive those who gave them success.
Druids in Diablo 2 were pretty savage and serious compared to Warcraft for example.
I actually expected a heavily armed knight-type class, but with a darker feel for D4’s last class. I felt like we had enough of the Diablo staple classes: mandatory barb, mandatory sorc, etc that we didn’t need mandatory necro too. I guess as I type, mandatory paladin’s not much different, is it?
As you said, it’s very probable we’ll be seeing new classes in the future (for a nominal fee of course). We’ll get our $60’s worth, then they’ll give us new content as we go. New continent to explore (for a nominal fee). New player power mechanic (for a nominal fee). New PVP BGs (nominal fee). New classes (Nominal fee). Oh, and some stash space for a ll the stuff you get to gear all of these characters. All totally optional of course, because we don’t sell power, but we will sell you things you’ll miss if you don’t have them.
Sigh, D:I has completely ruined me. I used to get excited about this kind of announcement. Now I’m just cynical. =/
Well, technically nature is never good or evil. It can be brutal and ruthless, but it is entirely neutral in that regard.
Since it turned out the angels were just as bad as the devils overall…the rule book of what is good or evil went up in flames.
The Necromancer is not “evil” they are all about the balance.

This is one of the biggest mistakes of D3, IMO. It destroyed the whole dichotomy of the Eternal Conflict. The whole thing is a metaphor for the human experience in which we have a desire to good good and to do evil and they’re constantly conflicting. By making the angels bad, they set up a situation in which that metaphor is a choice between evil and quasi-evil, ruining the metaphor.
The angels need to stay pure and the demons need to stay evil. A more interesting question is how we define each. That one’s not nearly as clear in the Diablo universe as it is in other IPs. Star Wars, for example, deals with the exact same thing with the Light and Dark sides of the Force. In that case, it’s designed as actions in service of others (light) and actions in service of self (dark).
The thing about evil is… The best and most evil of all make themselves look like they are good. Emperor Palpatine is a prime example going by your “force” reference.
Sadly, no. There is no option for player choice to be actually evil.
Yeah that is why I think an expansion around Leah might have worked incredibly well and bringing her back may well work for D4 as well if they want to go there.
Having the daughter of Diablo and Adria, being a possible anchor for Diablo, plus niece of Lilith who was raised by Cain to be good. So much that you might do with that and whether a nephalem like her is indeed free to choose her path freely as Tyrael believed or that her being directly related to a great evil would work out and the possible fear various parties might have. Not talking like she might well be quite the power in her own right.
The person that kills the most innocent players becomes the hunted (most evil).
This is an interesting idea. Take a human born of a demon (prime evil no less) and of a witch who committed to serve the demons, but still retains her humanity. Her birthright is about as evil as you can get but she was raised by a good man and given the same choice as all other humans: how will you live? Would she choose her nature (birthright) or her nurture (being raised by Cain)? A talented writer could have really done something with this.
Of course, *spoiler alert they killed her already, so it’s sort of a non-issue. Diablo games never really explore this type of complexity, really. It’s a shame too, because they could.
Well as long as Leah’s soul wasn’t consumed by Malthael, then there’s a chance that they’ll revisit her story in Diablo 4. As for how they’ll handle her character, that would remain to be seen.
IMO, she needs to stay dead. She was already sacrificed by her mother and her body destroyed when she was defeated. There’s nothing to revisit. It would come off as desperate to try and raise her soul, shove it into a new body, and then make her a story element.
New game. New characters.
Lilith is secretly Leah reborn and will turn on the baddies at the last moment and join us to win the day.
