D2R: Balance Changes Post Release?

After the release of Diablo 2 Resurrected, will Blizzard consider balance updates for the various classes? There are a few dominant builds in the current meta (e.g. hammerdins, wind druids, blizzard sorcs, etc.) and melee builds are rather lackluster. I understand balancing requires a good amount of testing and work, but hope atleast they consider buffing skills that are currently underpowered or underperforming. Would love if a Blue could take a moment to comment. Thoughts?

I think it depends on how well D2R sells.

If it goes gangbusters, then yes, likely Blizzard would see a point in investing in it further, and that would likely mean balances and potentially even additional content.

It’s kinda super tricky to re/balance D2 tbh

One thing I might think of is give some kind of “secondary” attack rating/s bonus/es for Necro & Sorc to fit the other classes a bit more (probably based on Int/Energy for ex.)… Or maybe make their attacks better vs mages/casters outright from the get-go so the “melee” becomes a bit more viable… THAT, in return for most impactful spells getting somewhat of a nerf (Frozen Orb, Bone Spirit, Bone Spear, Corpse Explode…)

But, there’s also mana “spam” in D2, so if balancing becomes a thing then maybe, MAYBE for the very first change I’d say increase the cost of mana potions so there’s some “economy”/efficiency involved

And in order to achieve that perhaps might be needed to “equalize”/normalize the selling costs a bit per item type/s, i.e. reduce the sell-costs of things like wands or scepters or whatever and kinda “even out” the costs a bit (a lvl3 wand can be sold for like 2500 from the get-go, and a lvl10 sword often barely sells for 800, and “claws” barely ever go above 200 lol)

BUT

I’m not that representative for D2 so let those that play it most do that talk

They said that they will balance it if the D2 community wants it.

Starcraft 1 Remaster didn’t get a balance patch because the community strongly rejecting it.

Warcraft 3 Reforged gets balance patch because WC3 community, including purists, wants it.

P.S. Please post at appropriate section:

If they make any balance changes, they should have two separate realms; classic and resurrected. So it remains possible to play D2R as close to the original as possible.

This. All in all, it depends on the D2R community as to whether Diablo 2 Resurrected receives any balance changes.

I see it similarly. It is simply a necessity to customize certain skillstrees and abilities to make them usable at all.

See druid summoning tree, tendrils are useless and die immediately anyway, the wolves are too few should all be usable together and withstand more, etc.
Fire Druid has talents that are hardly any good later, but the tree is massively full of synergies that still bring nothing.

Spear Amazon in melee is pretty much junk.

There are many more such cases and here an adjustment is already overdue.

Agreed. I hope Blizzard fixes some of the balance issues that have been lingering in Diablo 2 for over 20 years now.

If they change to much, they are VERY likely to turn this game from “Resurrected” into “Reforged”. It’s VERY HARD to improve a cult-classic like D2:LoD. Beyond basic technical improvements of the client they should keep the game intact, because they are most likely going to make stupid changes which will make the game worse. I don’t have any faith in Blizzard after WC3:R. The fact is that WC3:R is FAR WORSE than the original WC3:TFT, even technically. The threat is that D2:R will ALSO be botched in various ways. Beware, the day may come when you will want to play WC3 or D2 and it will NOT be possible, because both games will be turned into some kind of “Refunded” crap which is nothing like the originals.

I think it would be easy to improve D2.
It just isn’t a Remasters job to significantly improve the original game.
Small improvements/QoL here and there, and make it all optional.

You are VERY arrogant to say that it’s “easy” to improve D2 or WC3. Both of these games are cult-classics which endured for DECADES. Many seemingly “easy” improvements create various DEEP consequences which are very hard to predict and control. Sometimes one WRONG STROKE in a painting can RUIN the whole effect. This is especially true for classics.

I hear that a lot  Obviously do not agree.

Which hardly means they are perfect, or even anywhere close to perfect.

Of course, everyone wont agree on what the imperfect parts are.

You seem to don’t understand what is the difference between “classic” and “perfect”. A “classic” may have various FLAWS which should be KEPT, because it’s part of its IDENTITY. For ex. a great warrior may have scar on his face. He would be less of himself without that scar. D2:LoD had a rather crappy stat system. However now it’s part of its IDENTITY and it shouldn’t be changed.

Which is exactly what I said… I completely agree that D2R should not try to fix any major flaws of D2. At most, just do a few smaller changes/QoL. And everything they do change, make it optional.

Stuff like the attribute system should definitely not be changed.
Only saying that it would be quite easy to make a better attribute system.

One problem I see with many modern remasters is that they tend to be some kind of mix of a proper remaster and a sequel. For ex. when you remaster a movie, you simply improve image and audio quality. With games many remasters are some kind of half-sequels which is a bad idea. IMO, if you significantly change the UI, then you are going too far.

I do not see the harm in Blizzard improving some of the medicore builds in D2R with a future balance patch. If anything, this would only strengthen the Diablo franchise, not hinder it. The nuggets of nostalgia will remain intact and strong. Thoughts?

Well, I would rather like D2R to be quite conservative for its changes. I agree that a lot of builds would deserve being buffed, but it needs to be made little by little, to ensure that every change fits.
That being said, the shared stash does seem like a very good change, and I would definitely like it to be infinite like with Pluggy in single player (and limited in Closed BNet, in order to avoid having someone strain the server with millions of junk items).

Flaws should never be kept.

If they are central to the game, they should. Otherwise it is no longer a remaster of the same game.

Could not agree more.
