Campfire Select Screen - My final thoughts and feedback

Before you read this, I wanted to ask everyone: From the original, which class presentation did you like the most in the select screen and why?

Mine is the Druid and Amazon.

The way the Druid walks up, points at you, and does the “you’re dead” throat slit gesture. Kind of plain and simple, but while he does this you can hear the wind around him, and a wolf howling.

The Amazon walks up and does a stance in which she’s ready to fight with you. This woman that is overwhelmingly majestic but dangerous/deadly at the core, is honored that you chose her.

The campfire character select screen is probably one of the most important parts to newer players and that is often overlooked. It’s essential that they nail the look of the characters and give the same feeling.

Apart from the fact that the character models are a night and day difference; In the new one, there is no darkness, there is no sense of hopelessness and it’s too happy.

In the original, the characters are in a gloomy area, half their their faces/bodies are shrouded in darkness and being very dimly lit by the fireplace until you select them. That is when they come forward to present themselves to you and you see them better. There is a sense of mystery and unhappiness around it.

I think you guys are doing a fantastic job so far, and it’s a great sign that 95% of the complaints you’ve been getting are based on the looks of the characters, but I think if you guys can pay attention to garlic being put on a meat rack in Lut Gholein, you can make this better and true to the original to capture the essence.

Necro’s select screen is badass

Barbarian for sure. He shouts(pun intended, lol) because he’s ready to slay some demons. He then throws his hands up with an axe in one of them, and then continues to sharpen his axe. He’s just got done with killing hundreds of Hell’s evil denizens(Den of Evil in them last 4 words! :D), and he’s ready to get back into the fray(D3 Barbarian reference! :D)! This dude is not “Messerschmidting” around(Messerschmidt’s Reaver Champion Axe. It is in all 3 Diablo games, so it would be no surprise if it shows up again in D4)! Gotta love me some max level 57 BO with Battle Command + Skill Shrine! He’s the life of the party(literally) along with his pal the Druid(Oak Sage)! Together, they offer eternal life(another literally)! Barb, and Druid 4 life(pun intended! :D)!

Yup. For me, Necro’s was a close second to Druid/Amazon.

as far as iconic goes its the barbarian for me because ive heard it so many times after failing to make new creative character names that werent already taken haha. i think necro is most badass and they nailed the animation in d2res but i agree about darkness and character faces like you said.

Where was it shown in D2R for the Necro animation? I’ve only seen Sorcs and Barb’s so far.

it was shown in the deep dive interview panel with mrllamasc at blizzconline
oops kinda double posted on accident

I like how paladin comes with his shield, acting in discipline and shows that he’s ready to sacrifice (yeah a bad reference to his blood spilling skill) his own life to protect. Looks like a noble knight as he should have to be. Diablo 2: Resurrected campfire paladin is a completely different guy and is a disappointment to the original.

The only disappointing about the d2 resurrected trailer was the characters face and the barbs build.
