Blizzard on thee edge?

Rhyker just put this video out I found it intriguing how many Employees and teams have broken up or been lost. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t concerned for D2r.
I’d hate to see another Warcraft re forged I Hope VV drops some info soon.

Yep, they really goofed bigtime releasing Alpha without D3’s level of security with DRM.
D3 hasn’t been cracked in 9+ years. D2R Alpha was cracked instantly.

It really doesn’t look good when you look at Blizzard management right now. They should have had a security expert involved to make sure Alpha was good to go.

They had 100,000+ downloads of the crack and the crack eventually allowed all classes and multiplayer etc. That’s a lot of lost sales if those people are content with that version.

Blizzard needs stronger and better partnerships to outsource these kinds of security issues including bot detection.

You can get turnkey always-on DRM that works from other companies to integrate into your products - that would have prevented the crack. You can also get service-based or server-based AI bot-detection you can integrate.

I don’t know how much they’re rolling their own, but they should focus on what they do best which is gaming and let other companies that are experts in IT sec and anti-botting provide solutions for always-on DRM and anti-botting.

Do you mean “a lot of free advertising”? Because piracy usually boosts sales.

Because you need to be online always, and this is a really bad thing. I want to play alone in my cabin in the woods, drinking kvas, eating solonina, and fighting our great Russian bears, I don’t want to maintain a connection all the time to play a game.

This is true of small or new companies that don’t have strong branding and nobody has heard of them. They need to get the word out and get a buzz going. Thus piracy can help them to some extent because any news is “good news”.

This is not typically true of goliaths like Blizzard though and well-established brands/franchises like Diablo.

Agreed.

Perhaps they were counting on it happening.

There may have been some reason in their agenda to allow it to happen.

Yes we knew blizz was pulling people off D2r weeks ago because D2R is DONE. lmao. Why would anyone be “concerned”? We’ve literally played the Alpha and it is amazing. Im very glad they aren’t changing or adding anything else at the moment and couldn’t care less if they add anything in the future. Release the game already!!!

That’s an interesting point. I think the one thing they’re getting out of the Alpha being cracked is they’ve sent a strong message to the hacking community that they will take legal action when a certain class of modding is done to D2R.

Sony did the same I think when George Hotz cracked playstation ps3 console. They made a huge example out of certain people and made others reluctant to hack the next generation of console.

But unfortunately there are so many guys with expertise on PC cracking, compared with console hacking that others will just crack D2R instantly again unless they are switching to a better always-on DRM scheme like the one D3 uses.

Also I think investors look at this kind of thing and get nervous. From the outside it just looks like Blizzard is incompetent with security to be honest.

No it doesn’t. It especially won’t with a 20+ year old game. Everyone who wants to already knows exactly how D2 plays. They aren’t changing enough to really matter in that sense.

At this point we can only really go off the information we’ve been presented still and everything I’ve seen, I’m impressed with. Hopefully they follow their course and we get a true remaster.

I’m also very for actioning the ‘crackers’. I think this was a required move and shows commitment for them to action similar ‘mods’ like maphack and pikit in the future.

the alpha was awesome

concerned about what?

early access being hacked/cracked and botting scripts being created obviously.
that’s how it all starts and B4 you know it you got an etal bot. Botting destroys the game and imo &is a huge concern, if alpha was un secured it raises even more concern for beta multiplayer stress testing.

It was not modding they banned. They told these people to maybe kindly stop hacking the unfinished alpha, make it playeable off-line and even set up a multiplayer server and download new patches for it somehow from Battle Net, when the Alpha lasted only a few days… The creators already confirmed modding WILL be allowed. It’s the issue that these guys are basically hacking an alpha build and making it available free to play.

All I see is a clickbait video using a clickbait headline. “Blizzard vs modders omg!”

That’s not at all what happened.

Also people worried about bots crack me up. We already knew that D2R uses most of the same code underneath the new graphics. Of course all old bot/cheating software would still be mostly compatible. What did you expect?

There are many botting solutions to this in which I have posted in previous comments. For ex: automatically kicking accounts to the lobby if there is no response from a keyboard control or mouse click within 2 minutes and 45 secs. Theres prob no way to rid of botting entirely but there are ways to seriously prevent an enormous portion of it.

I am more concerned about in which I previously discussed before are the characters/ items/ skills/ stats being hacked into or altered in a way the game should not allow. As long as the files or code of the game cannot be accessed, and there are not any boxes accessible to a player that they can type in any kind of commands into to change these things. It should be ok.

The duping methods ive previously discussed which I wont get into right now

The last concern I have are how safe are our internet connections are while in the lobby or connecting to a previously created game with other users. IP cannot be accessed. And hope they look into creating the best experience testing 8 different devs in a game casting spells on each other, attacking each other, mass spamming lightning bolts, fireballs and blizzards everywhere and that this can run smoothly without any interference.

Also cooooleys pvp video suggestions.
