The generalization of the sentiment you are espousing is “naivete / stupidity / gullibility / etc. ‘should’ be punished (or at least taken advantage of)” and I don’t understand what drastic circumstances in either your nature or nurture caused such a warped perspective on how humans “should” treat each other.

Like, why should we NOT expect better, as consumers? Is that not THE integral part of capitalism? That WE hold the power? Why would you go to bat, so to speak, for the shifty merchant looking to make a quick buck? You’re rooting for the wrong team here.

Keyword: RUMOR.

One SHOULDN’T expect better from an unconfirmed source or …a rumor. One can only blame himself for setting himself up for disappointment in the first place. It is not about rooting the wrong team here or not.
