Does the change make sense to anyone? It seems so minor to a bad set that it effectively changes nothing.

Nope, still going to salvage it.
If they made every piece of Blackthornes roll with a random elemental damage bonus, I might consider experimenting a bit.
The only use it might have is for some LoD builds that don’t use fire and would have used Cindercoat if it came in another elemental flavor. Of course, to keep the LoD bonus active, you can’t then use any other Blackthorne piece.
This just clearly shows that the remaining D3 developers have no clue about what they are doing! Blackthorns has to be removed completely from the game. It was useless the last years and will remain useless the next years!

It’s a replacement for the Swamp Land Waders that all classes have access to. Why on earth they want to put them on the Blackthorne pants and not Skelon’s Deceit instead is just a pure mystery. Especially since the pants are mostly used in LoN/D builds.

Because you don’t have to roll a WD anymore to get an extra elemental damage on your pants . Any class can drop a Blackthorne pants that rolls a new elemental damage …

It is meant to fix the issue with swamp lands which are the only pants in the game that can roll with elemental. They drop for witch doctor and after you get them you still have to reforge them to your class’s needs. That way, they can drop as ancient or better with good stats from the start and even if they are not the “gg perfect drop” that you are missing, it is very convenient to reroll just one stat with the enchantress. I know that i have found more than 10 primal blackthorne pants in my life and they could be a perfect item for a LoD build.

Jousting Mail is a pants piece. As was mentioned, it was clearly meant as an alternative to Swamp Land Waders. It’s more a minor QoL change (similar to how they did with SoJ), not meant to shift the META or anything. Only gg SLW will trump this, which is much harder to get compare to this.
Oh yeah. Just laying this out as I’m sure I’m not the only one, on a char I don’t push, I did use ancient Blackthorn pants in a LoD build. : D

Not really, you don’t have to wear the whole BT set, you just wear the pant to replace swamp land pants to get an extra 20% elemental damage …
There is lots of build stacking elemental damage

Blackthorne should be revamp too for followers, to let them use more skills for example.
Because people been asking for ages to makes this set somewhat useful so that’s what they went with.

I kinda like it, no need to do that stupid WD thing to get a swamp land…
Ok it would be easier to let swamp land drop for all chars of course… Seems like a much better solution over all, but it’s better than nothing…

I believe that the Blackthorne change is there for those builds that use Swamp Land Waders.
This way you don’t have to have a Witch Doctor to get them. Since Blackthornes drop for all you will be able to get one for yourself.

It’s meant to be given to your follower. Blackthorne chest for Templar or Scoundrel and perhaps Tal Rasha chest for Enchantress, thanks to IASpd% and int bonus. Nothing else, really. If BT set works on Followers, (didn’t read about this bit, but there are implications that Cain and Sage set working on them) you may as well get rid of invulnerability token too.
If you’re min-maxing LoD, you’d still want Swamp Wader’s Pants, and then you’d squeeze in Blackthorne’s Spurs (boots) with an elemental damage roll.
Depending upon the build, you could theoretically go nuts with Fire rolls:
- Magefist
- Andariel’s
- Cindercoat
- Swamp Waders
- Blackthorne’s Spurs
- New SoJ
- Legacy SoJ
- Bracer
- Amulet
- Axe of Sankis / Balefire Caster
- Lidless Wall
That’s 220% Fire %, I’m sure taking other legendary items is more practical from a survival and damage standpoint, and Blackthorne’s will most likely serve as a convenience item on the leg slot for LoD/LoN.
Without looking the Jousting mail is the pants right? If so then they can replace SLW for classes that use them and they will not have to use pants with int rolls anymore.
Elemental Damage roll is not available on Blackthorne’s Spurs.
I think Swamp Land Waders offers the benefit of having an extra primary affix. They should add one more to Blackthorns so it’s 1:1 with Swamp Land Waders.
They should have added a new non-set leg armor, or added it to Skelon’s. Still, a good change. Not how I would have done it but a useful change.
