Does anyone know what level Flawless Royal and Royal gems start being dropped instead of Imperial and Marquise?
I’m running at Torment VIII, and I’m still only getting Imperial and Marquise gems dropping.
I’d really like to ditch the slots that I keep open for these lower level gems to use for other things. Just like I did with Regular, Flawless, Square, Flawless Square and Star gem slots I used to keep in my stash.
They do not drop. You have to get Jeweler’s plans by running Bounties, then you can combine lower gems.
Imperial is the highest that can drop naturally.

Oh…ok. Thanks.
I thought eventually, like all the other lower level gems, they would stop dropping and only the highest level gems would drop. I guess I’ll have to keep 10 spots of a tab in my stash for these low level gems.
Note you’ll need those “low level” gems to enchant rings and amulets at the Mystic, and also to make rings and amulets at the Jeweler (to upgrade using Hope of Cain recipe (#3) in Kanai’s cube).

The only gems you need are Flawless Royal and Imperial. All the rest don’t matter to keep. Just upgrade them.

Except for crafting rare rings and amulets… for these you need Marquise gems.

I never do that so I don’t consider it. It’s super rare I need to do that.
There are two cases when I find it useful:
- at the start of a season, when you just reached level 70, in case you do not have any decent legendary rings yet
- or later when you have so many gems that you do not know what to do with them and if you are really in lack of yellow veiled crystals: then you can just craft rare rings and amulets and salvage them

I (and prob most everyone else) only keep Marq, Imperial, and Flawless Royal Gems. Marq I generally just keep in whatever characters inventory and upgrade once in a while all of them to imperials to be kept in stash.
But as above stated, Imperials are the highest “dropped” gems.

Oh, I don’t think I’ve ever needed to enchant a ring or amulet. They seem to be the only items that drop with decent statistics (or they’re complete garbage and I just salvage them).
I’ve enchanted nearly everything else to get one of the statistics on the item fixed.
I’d really like to clean up my stash, and was hoping that at some point those gems wouldn’t be needed anymore. I was hoping to fill those spots with some legendary gems that I’ll be leveling up for augmenting in Kanai’s Cube (aka Caldesann’s Despair).
I’ve tried playing a seasonal character to get another stash tab, but I just don’t play the game enough. I’ll never get one that way, as they put it way out of reach for the casual gamer.
My character already has half of his inventory tab full with stuff. I’ve never thought to keep the gems in the inventory tab. I may have to rethink how to use it more efficiently.
Is there any way to break down gems from Flawless Royal, Royal, Flawless Imperial and Imperial down to Marquise? I’ve already upped a bunch of them.
Thanks for all the insight.
No, once upped, they cannot be downed. Really its 15 total spaces (if you keep Marquise, Imperial and flawless royals. And Having excess flawless royals OUTSIDE of your main stat (for augmenting) isn’t really needed so its 11 slots. Theres enough stash space for plenty of gear for 2-3 classes easily (can have up to 13 stash pages). Never keep any rares really and a LOT of legendaries are instant salvage meat. And as I stated as well, i dont even keep Marq gems in the stash and just keep them in my inventory since they drop often enough.
Next season some of the shards will salvage for them. It will make getting gems easier.
Going from level 1 to completing Guardian can be done in under 20 hours played, a lot less than that if the initial 1-70 levelling happens as a result of someone giving you a boost. Unlocking the extra Stash tab only requires completion of Conqueror (the chapter prior to Guardian) so can be done in even less time. You could literally start the season today, and have the Stash tab unlocked before the season ends quite easily.
My seasonal “Gems” tab is completely full…
The only items I do keep are;
- Gems
- Legendary Gems
- Legendary Potions
- Legendary Consumables (Ramaladni’s Gift)
- Legendary Portal Devices (Infernal Machines)
- 1 copy of Staff of Herding
- 1 copy of Legendary Items or replaced with Ancient Legendary Items (I’ve never gotten anything higher than Ancient Legendary Items)
- 1 copy of Set Items or replaced with Ancient Set Items (I’ve never gotten anything higher than Ancient Set Items)
Yes, I agree with you. 99% of legendaries are salvage meat. When I get back to town, I mass identify everything, drop off my gems, then head right over to Haedrig Eamon…once in a blue moon do I keep anything to check against what I already have in my stash.
I do pick up Rare items from time to time to try and fill out my Kanai’s Cube slots (I’ve only a few left to fill).
- Defender of Westmarch -shield
- Pus Spitter -crossbow
- Skycutter -sword
- Stalgard’s Decimator -2 hand sword
But I rarely remember to pick them up.
@Meteorblade,
It’s been a long time since I’ve every played co-operative. I mostly only play solo, so have never gotten a boost from anyone.
I’ve already put over 100 hours into my seasonal character and am not close to getting the extra stash tab. I’m on Champion 8/10 objectives completed (Necromancer level 70, 467 Paragon level). I must be doing something way wrong.
There’s about a 10% chance that salvaging a shard will produce a Flawless Royal. Given that shards can be used as quick ways to get high buffs on ancients that seems like a bad way to use them.
It’ll be easy to get shards. You can farm them from act bosses.
That was possible on the PTR. Will the drop rate be even close to what it was there? If so, then, yeah… gem farming will be a thing.
Many players do it the first weekend. I and sure you can do it over 3 - 4 months.
That remains to be seen of course. Most likely they’ll drop like that on live because the bottleneck will not be the shards but the embers we need to make them powerful. And embers won’t be that easy to get. (Some have estimatet that the drop rate could be about twice the ramaladni’s).

With the level of powercreep thats happened, getting the season journey complete really doesn’t take that long (longest part it feels like is just multi-running GRs to get 3 Gems to 70 for the guardian level).
Between kadala, upgrade rare in the cube, Set conversion in the cube along with the free sages set to get double death breaths set up on the follower, its very quick now.
