I’ve been attempting to play various builds with different followers and different setups, thinking that if we can save the armory for the follower setups, then it’ll save us a lot of time re-gearing any of them for solo. Also, It’ll be nice for the followers to have their own inventory or stash. It seems it can tidy up a lot of stuff than giving us the players’ extra stash space.
On the other hand, besides esoteric alteration and mutilation guard, would it be possible for the follower to have a useful third legendary gem instead of using a regular gem?
I do not think the follower needs their own Stash but I do think saving current gear in a smaller Footlocker (with 5 slots so 5 different loadouts) would be good and, realistically, they don’t really even need the 2 gems that do work on them but it makes things more interesting so… sure, they should be able to use any legendary gem but get half the effect when so equipped, not emanating to the player, to give options but still restrict their power since followers are not supposed to be that strong.
IMO, all I really would like is an Armory slot or two for them so I could make one for farming and one for GR pushing where you swap out the gold-find stuff for survivability and cc.
I don’t think we really need another legendary gem on the followers. Followers don’t do DPS. The game’s designed so we have to do the killing, and that’s fair. They do get access to the two survivability gems which makes the “follower cannot die” bonus optional rather than mandatory. If they were to add access to another legendary gem, which would you allow?
Boon of the Hoarder needs to be hero-only
None of the damage ones would make any real difference
The follower should be able to use legendary gems and treat them as emanate features to the player.
For example, Follower wearing Molten Gem, player gets the regen boost from the Molten Gem despite not wearing it. Obviously, it can’t stack if both players wearing the same gem.
Only gearing you ever have to do is changing their tokens and sometimes one ring. Nemesis Bracers, Oculus ring, Homing Pads and Flavor of Time stays no matter what. Cain’s Set pieces stay for increased attack speed bonus and Captain Crimson only matters for Templar. At any given time Cain’s and Sage’s Set pieces can be used together as long as you give them a Royal Grandeur ring. That single ring slot can easily swapped for Unity when you need to push and you can easily swap out Sage’s pieces for something else.
Rest of the combination is hardly relevant to the purpose. There are Best-in-Slot items for Followers that you can’t bother to change.
Token of use decision lie beneath how well you geared them up and the task at hand. While invulnerability token is flexible, halved cooldowns require high end gear for high pushes and all skill access is comfortable for speedfarms. There are videos about Follower mechanics over at maxroll and youtube for token of choice and making use of Set item bonuses. You should give them a watch.
Also they can make use of three gems already; Mutilation Guard, Esoteric Alteration and Gem of Ease which you can socket to their weapons. Extra experience per kill from GoE, will be shared to your character with 20% efficiency.
If you want even more benefit, you can wear Enforcer (rank 25; Pets take 90% less damage) on your Witch Doctor or Monk to make them nearly unimpaired along a high tier Greater Rift without invulnerability token.
According to a very old stickied thread that is now vanished at New Player Help section, it worked. I trust the author as he tested every item that works on Followers one by one. If it changed by now after Follower revamp with Season 23, I have no idea anymore.
i like the idea of expanding legendary gems for followers. esoteric and mutilation guard feel more like an accident than something on purpose. but it would be great seeing more support gems that followers can equip that emanate to add to the pool. maybe reduce the effects of the lesser used gems for the three normal jewelry slots on followers or make the follower token be socketable via something like a Ramaladni’s Gift consumable that allows an emanate effect with a legendary gem.
the Follower locker would be great too just because people might want to have a gold farming setup instead of a push setup. or maybe an XP farming setup.
Would fit in the same theme of the other gems that work with followers, and the extra life regen would really help them survive without an immortality relic.
I tested it about a month ago, checking XP granted from kills (of the same monster type) with follower with Gem of Ease socketed vs. not socketed. Having Gem of Ease socketed on follower did not grant additional XP when killing enemies.
Regular XP on kill secondary affix rolls on your follower’s gear work (at 20%), but the XP on kill from Gem of Ease does not appear to apply when socketed in a follower’s weapon.
Switching gear on followers is a pain in the ***. I agree it would be a good improvement if the follower gear changed when your character chose a different setup via the armory.
I’m sure we’ve all been there; we forget to prep the follower for keys and gold after running GR’s and visa versa.
The solution I work with helps but isn’t ideal. What I did was make 2 followers for pushing and 1 for vaults/bounties/Neph rifts. They all have their own items. No need to share or switch. I just pick the follower I need without having to unequip and then re-equip items.
I like that idea! Also, it would cool if there were some Follower specific Armor and weapon sets now that we can fully equip a follower.
Sets that may capitalize on their specific Talents.
Since we already add Armor to them that uses Bracers, Belt, Amulet and so forth, there should be 3 piece sets for Torso, Legs and Head or Feet.
According to a few sources and that one old thread I mentioned GoE worked on Followers but I never tested it myself. Perhaps it never was the case and it didn’t work as Strix mentioned. More or less, there’s still a third gem but it’s very specific to pet builds as Enforcer had to be worn on the player for Follower to benefit from it.
What would be nice is that the armory puts everything back where it was found/set to be found so it doesn’t just semi randomly splat it into your stash. They would show ghost icons of the items and if you put something on that icon, it will just go somewhere else after changing gear. Honestly, the armory makes it nearly pointless to organize your gear.
It swaps positions, the items you are wearing get swapped into the spots where with the items you are putting on were pulled from.
Exceptions are gems. And switching from a dual wield to a 2-hander. It’ll put the first weapon where the 2-hander was but dump the second weapon into your inventory.
A good workaround to keep your stash organized is to always swap back to the same base set. So you always swap either from your base set to a new profile or from the new profile back to your base set. Never swap directly between two different profiles, always go back to your base set first.
I use my T16 set for this usually. I’ll always use my T16 wizard set as the default, and if I switch to a new profile, I’ll switch back to my T16 set when I’m done.
Since it’s always swapping positions, if you swap from your base set to a new profile, it’ll put your base set back where the new profile pieces were. Then if you switch back to your base set, it swaps them back. And you get back to basically the same stash state as where you started.
As long as you always go: base set → profile 2 → base set → profile 4 → base set → profile 7 → base set, your stash should stay mostly organized, because you will always be swapping things out with your base set and then putting them back in to the same spots.
The problems only come in when you switch directly from base set → profile 2 → profile 4 → profile 7 → base set. That will jumble up all the pieces from profiles 2/4/7 (in this case, profile 2 pieces will end up where profile 4 was originally, profile 4 pieces will be where profile 7 was originally, and profile 7 will be where profile 2 was originally).
I still call it semi random for a reason. Even when you place these items where you want them, it does end up getting mixed around at some point for various reasons. I’ve never had it to where when I changed gear, I knew exactly where it’d be. I would organize specifically to avoid it and it still manages to place it nonsensically.
Isn’t it both rings? When I do rifts my enchantress wears RoRG and Avarice, speed GR’s its Leoric’s Signet and Hellfire ring for the optimum XP and in pushes Oculus and Leoric’s.
And helms as well: Broken Crown in rifts for more gems with Leoric’s in speeds for more XP and Mempo of Twilight for pushing (haven’t gotten around to doing that yet).
And then also Tal Rasha’s for pushing and Goldskin for rifts.
I don’t find it too bad to swap the pieces at the moment. I put them all in the top part of a specific follower tab so just need to right click those few items to move them around. But a follower armoury would be nice.
I think Molten Gem is the way to go. Now, if you want to reduce the cooldown of all your follower skills, you must sacrifice the immortality token/relic/focus. In addition, some characters cannot afford enforcer for their build and must spare the slot for another legendary gem while some pet-build characters such as Marauder’s DH and Inna’s monk would significantly benefit from the usage of enforcer. I’m actually okay with enforcer helping to keep the followers tougher, but for me, I never want my zDH wearing enforcer just to keep the followers alive. So, I’m thinking of an alternative to yield a similar result.
If Blizzard can do something to make the builds more diverse, it’s good to consider giving the followers an access to a third legendary gem that can buff their toughness more significantly (not as crazy as the effect from the main character’s equipping enforcer).
