Area Damage - Explain this please!

Someone said area damage isn’t applied to all attacks but only certain ones. Is this true? If it is true, how do I know what skills/runes apply area dmg?

I would assume anything that effects an area and not a singular target.

I’m talking about Area Damage affix on items. I know what AoE is.

Only abilities that have proc coefficient above 0 can proc area damage. General rule: proc don’t proc procs. If area damage procs, it is applied to all enemies within 10 yard radius of initial impact point.

One example is the ww barb build where rend is automatically applied when whirlwinding. These rend hits don’t proc area damage. Only manually cast rend hits will proc AD.

I also remember some previous season theme builds for monk for example where the fire allies didn’t proc AD, but water ally did proc it.

Im starting to understand. So pretty much ALL damage that YOU apply. Can’t be any proc or secondary type of damage.

The last thing that is confusing me is that I read PETS can apply area damage from a previous patch. Pets seem like secondary dmg.

Pets can proc area damage. Generally speaking.
