2.6.9 Haunted Visions

I’m a little concerned about changes to Haunted Visions in patch 2.6.9. The PTR notes reads:

Simulacrum now drains 5% 1% of your maximum life every second and lasts twice as long forever . They can now duplicate Grim Scythe instead of Skeletal Mage.

Does that mean simulacrums no longer duplicate Skeletal Mage if I use HV?

I really hope not.

That is exactly what it means. You can use Simulacrum without Haunted Visions, and still get the extra mages from them, but this change is clearly meant to force that choice. The change making Simulacrum last forever would apparently have been too powerful with Singularity mages. Now you have to choose to either have the extra essence all the time but only get 2 mages per cast, or have the extra essence for only a 20 second window, but get 4 mages per cast.

No

They can duplicate Grim Scythe

If you have Grim Scythe slotted, when you use Grim Scythe, Simulacrums will also use Grim Scythe.

And just like before:

If you have a secondary skill (Bone Spear, Nova, Mage) slotted, when you use this secondary skill, Simulacrums will also use this secondary skill.

Note the “instead of Skeletal Mage” part. It is entirely separate from the addition of Grim Scythe. You don’t get to pick which part of the legendary applies to you. Put on the amulet, and your Simulacrum will no longer duplicate your casts of Skeletal Mage, but if you use Grim Scythe, it WILL duplicate that. Feel free to imagine that it is going to check your equipped skills and only stop duplicating mages if you have Grim Scythe on your bar, but that isn’t what is going to happen.
