Xbox users: you could potentially salvage anything you lost

Hi,

WARNING: the technique here is based on partially tested features and theory, be warned, I take no responsibility for your loss!

I play offline, single player and have no access to trading, self finding anything is hard and time consuming.

This afternoon, after long months of tireless farming, I managed to cube up lots of runes and finally, use my only ever found OHM rune for a CTA. It rolled 4/1/3 :sob: I am still not over it, feels like I lost a HC character and to be honest, I am not even convinced that CTA is worth it after all. That 70sec buff is nothing, disappears before you start enjoying it. I lose my weapon swap, tele staff or alibaba, whatever so… not sure.

Anyway, I recently upgraded my Xbox, which was simple and smooth, I decided to test the cloud backup feature to recover ā€˜lost’ stuff. I tested my theory on number of Spirit rolls just now and I can confirm, this works 100% but there are some things to be aware of.

We all know, that Xbox saves all our local backups in the cloud but we cannot see them, we cannot access them, we just know that they are there. (or hope)

To me, it seems that the console uploads the backups when you quit the game so what I did was:

  • when I rolled my Spirit and did not like the results I simply pulled the network cable out of the Xbox (any other way works that prevents network upload)
  • quit the game
  • went into the game settings and simply deleted the local savings (yep, this is the dangerous part!!)
  • reconnected the LAN and started the game again

Next time when I started the game the cloud sync process started, pulled down my backups and there I was before my Spirit roll.

  • I never tested this on HC character recovery but based on my experience, it should work the same way

  • if you have poor network connectivity or something else preventing to upload backups, you may not get the latest one back which can be just as bad as losing something

  • so if I ever roll again any high cost runeword, I will prep the roll, keep it in a shared stash for a while and quit the game number of times to make sure that one backup at least succeeds at some point.

  • Be aware, that abusing this multiple time back to back may end up causing harm as networks tend to have rate limits, etc so just use it wisely and occasionally when you feel like you need to.

Does it sound like abusing the backups? Sure does but we have no heroeditor, we have no dev switches for unlimited respec, etc so I think we deserve a bit of cheating too sometimes.

Good Luck if you give it a go!

(This does not work anymore. do NOT ATTEMPT THIS) Works on ps5 by just pressing ps button > shut down game > start the game again. <----- FIXED

It is definitely working on Xbox, I have been using it almost daily for weeks now, thoroughly tested.

What happens to the files that you don’t delete? Does it take the most recent one? Or will it roll you back when you sync? For example, let say you were to roll your spirit, and move it to the shared stash, and then do your trick. Would it still be there after you synced, or would that revert as well.

Not sure what you are asking exactly but I can tell you (done hundreds of this) is that:

  • IF YOU SAVE your hero every time then quit/close the game , it wipes everything locally and restores everything from cloud including shared stash, 100%.

Now, the other option you have is that you DON’T save your hero, just quit/close the game, delete locally then sync. In this case, stuff from shared stash might not be restored or you could end up with duped bits from shared stash. I cannot tell you the reason behind this but my theory is that the game does some kind of temp saves (every time you see the pentagram turning in the bottom right corner). If you play the game long enough without quitting (extensive testing shows about 20-40min) you do actually get your local saves synced to the cloud in the background including temp saves you have, but it is different than you normal saves. And this can trigger duping and also shared stash item losing, be warned. I am not sure about the mechanics but there has to be some software glitch that either does a temp/normal save ā€œmergeā€ at game start after you synced this sort of backup down from cloud, or the temp saves are actually in a different location on the console and the local wipe does not clear it. So when you delete and sync, you get both back causing duping.

There are some videos on YT explaining something similar for PS, apparently working ever since but I only managed to trigger this once and only once, probably accidentally. I was playing normally and had 1 anni at the time shared in stash with my heros. The game quit unexpectedly and when I restarted, my hero had the anni in inventory and in shared stash too. I played with this and managed to dupe at that time some items. I could not ever since… After few months of playing with this it worked the other way around, I lost a 6/6/1 CTA from shared stash while testing this duping method so be aware that it is not safe.

Thanks, the answer is in there. The thing about items getting duped, or what people call the shared stash glitch, is that they products of the same thing, just in reverse. They happen because the character file, and shared stash file are 2 separate save files, that both have to save. There is also going to be a bit of a gap between the saves, so they don’t happen at the same time and corrupt each other.

The ā€œshared stash glitchā€ usually happens when people transfer an item when the character to the shared stash, and immediately quit, and close the game after quitting. In that case the item is no longer on the character because they put it in the shared stash and save quit, saving the character, but not giving the shared stash time to save with the item that was just put there, and of course the opposite can happen if you go the other way.

But I think there might be some difference between PS and Xbox versions. No matter how fast I save and quit after stash move, I cannot seem to trigger this sort of glitch. I wait for the pentagram appearing, move then quit. Shared stash always saved my move and will not have item that was moved to hero stash. I thought the they changed the code or it is Xbox specific that when you save, it forces shared stash save as well even though they are separate.
