FYI, this was raised as a bug way back when and the devs replied “working as intended”. One way to see that they really intended this is that there’s a flag in the original code that enables this particular DOT mechanic and it’s used in exactly 1 place in the game - these Tomb Vipers. There are ways to nullify that damage, but they don’t involve poison resists. In fact the major source of damage isn’t even poison. It’s physical. Lol
They have always been deadly AF… but seeing how Fire Wall has become OP supposedly due to higher higher frame rate meaning more tics over time, perhaps this is the same case with Poison Vipers in D2R.
My bro, this is a very old original D2 bug. People actually vouched to want to keep that bug in D2r. No idea how you’ve never seen that in original D2, but it’s been there forever man.
Damage reduction? My merc with 2000 hp, 75% resist, fade proc on top and 165% attack speed, with 18% LL. Yet dies in less then 1s. Litteraly from 100-0 faster then you can blink.
Damage reduction does nothing noticable lol.
Its just a place created specifically to be a gold sink. Nothing more lol
Integer damage reduction, not % damage reduction. To completely nullify it, you’ll need somewhere between 30 to 45 damage reduction. Try using 7 Sol runes if you don’t have any other sources, but amulets can spawn with up to 25 damage reduction. An Iron Pelt with a Sol rune can very noticeably reduce this damage. You can also use GBane, but nobody puts a Sol in that thing. Lol. This does not apply if you get amped, or if the tomb vipers get might aura. If that happens, you’ll need over 100 physical damage reduction. Possible, but I doubt you’ll be doing much fighting that way.
It’s like someone above me writes. Instead of poison, they do physical damage. I never noticed that in the original game. I probably didn’t go there that often. It’s a bug. It should be repaired.
Nothing’s wrong with them, it’s an intended bug (devs even said so). Likely meant to make people actually use a bit of caution and have a bit of fear instead of completely turning their brains off. There are plenty of reasonable/viable ways to deal with them, it’s really a non-issue. If you’re really that afraid of them or really can’t handle them or skip them, then just save and exit and try again and hope for no snakes. It’s not like getting to Nihlathak takes any real amount of time anyways.
And now you know why D keys are worth twice as much as H and T keys =)
If you want to farm nilthak safely… make a fury druid. Incredibly under rated for key farming. 6500 health and a BOTD great poleaxe for long range attacking with Fury, i just waltz through the clouds and kill the snakes
From what I’ve heard, they dmg they do is twofold: poison and physical, but only while you’re standing inside of the cloud itself. Basically since the only way to resist physical dmg is through “dmg reduction” which is capped at 50 I believe, the poison cloud will tick way harder than it should. To make matters worst, the poison cloud can remain invisible for a small duration making it even more difficult to stay a live.
