Hello, I was using my Nintendo switch and decided to play some D2R and I get that you need to use authentication when logging in(which is still a bit silly on a mobile console with no internet connection!!) but why do I have to have a constant connection up while playing the game offline?
I was playing offline and all of a sudden my internet stopped working and the game prompted me to connect back if I want to keep playing, which is ridiculous, I am playing offline!
I shouldn’t have a constant internet connection on a console that doesn’t even have it’s own connection and needs to get it from outside sources, it’s a mobile console and not only that, the least you could do is supply a cloud service where I can play my single player characters on both my console and my PC if you have a constant internet connection, if I don’t get to have that, why do I need to be connected while playing single player?
this is ridiculous, would have been nice to be able to receive a refund for the switch version but I already contacted support and they are not able to give refunds on the switch
yeah I know how and why it works that way, but it’s a mobile console, what sense is there to make you play it with a constant online connection which doesn’t even involve cloud saves
Piracy is an old issue and there are different ways to combat it, if they don’t trust Nintendo with how they handle their console, then they shouldn’t release it there or come up with their own launcher, Piracy happens on the PC as well I assure you, but I am still able to play offline way better then you would with a mobile console which is ridiculous
Are you sure you were playing offline? At least on the PC, I can play offline with no internet connection (I block communications with my firewall). At least until 30 days pass and I have to log in again.
I am going to echo what TimberWolf said. At least on PC you can play totally offline. You need to Authenticate around once every 30 days, but other than that you can engage in offline play. Pretty sure Console is the same?
Because they got mad when they lost the lawsuit against dota and now they don’t want people modifying their games and making money off of it. So you you’re always being watched
You are both right and it is exactly my point, which baffles me why they did not implement the same method for the Nintendo switch, I was expecting that exact scenario and it did not allow me to play without an active connection on single player
It’s possible this might be some kind of bug. Maybe post in the Bug Forum (for the Switch).
Also, are there any settings for the Switch or the game itself that might make a difference here? Maybe give Uncle Google a shout to see if he knows anything helpful.
If this situation is indeed intentional, it really bites excrement.
Agreed! This yet another reason I shall go back to regular D2LoD … I don’t need an internet connection to play offline, I need it to play online, or is that concept a little too deep to grasp?
And while we are at it … why do I need an app to start and play my game? Never needed it for D2LoD. Should be able to click the game icon and just log in and play, not open an app then play.
Your control and power issues and wanting to invade my privacy by monitoring my computer and trying to steal information does not cut it.
why should I EVER have to log in if I play single player? They do not need a peek into my system or information if I play offline.
Wow. I didn’t believe this at first, and I have the switch version as well as PC (yes, I bought the game twice.) I turned on my switch, put it in airplane mode and sure enough… can’t even play my single player characters.
It is not. I can confirm. When you get to the D2 splash screen it prompts you to make an internet connection to authenticate. It cannot progress to character selection without that.
Unfortunately the reason this occurs isn’t because of anything Blizzard has done, but due to the requirements for digital purchases on consoles. Without an internet connection none of them work because they can’t be verified as active for your account. It may say “connecting to Battle.net”, but it’s also connecting to the console’s specific authentication servers to verify the game license is valid. This is because the consoles have the ability to let the player put the games on removable storage (NVMe drives for current consoles) and play them on another console, with the restriction that you have to create a user account specifically for you on the console you move the drive to.
This is how and why the console versions differ from the PC version. I’d much rather have a disc version (even if it requires upgrades when they come out) so I could play truly offline since disc based games don’t require that internet connection when starting up in order to play offline like digital purchases do. It makes it all the more frustrating when a player is in an area where internet isn’t always available due to various conditions.
Hogwash. Plenty of my downloaded games launch when I turn off the wifi, or turn on airplane mode. Including D3, Pokemon Arceus, Pokemon Sword/Shield, Smash Bros, and Darkest Dungeon.
actually games usually don’t require authentication at start up although D2R on the Nintendo switch does, but we are not referring to the authentication part in this topic, the game will stop you from playing mid game even after authenticating if you lose internet connecting while playing and won’t let you continue until you will reinstate it, even though you are playing on single player
