I’ve been playing Diablo 2: Resurrected for a while now, and something that consistently frustrates me is the limitation on how many item labels can be displayed on the ground at once. Currently, it’s capped at 32, and while this might have been sufficient back in the day, it just doesn’t seem to hold up.
When farming in high-density areas or after large battles, the sheer number of drops often exceeds this limit. As a result, important items can easily get buried or missed entirely. It’s frustrating to think that I might have left behind something valuable because it wasn’t visible among the 32 displayed labels.
It feels like increasing this cap should be possible without causing performance issues. Even just bumping the limit up would help alleviate the frustration of potentially missing rare drops.
Why is this such a hard change to implement? It would be a massive quality-of-life improvement for players, and I’m sure many of us would appreciate it. At the very least, having an option to adjust this in the settings would give players more control over their experience.
It could also be a great first step toward implementing a more robust loot filtering system in the long term. By incrementally improving the current item label system, starting with increasing the cap, Blizzard could lay the groundwork for more advanced features down the line, like customizable loot filters or prioritizing rare and valuable items over low-tier drops. This would allow players to fine-tune their experience, reducing the clutter and making it easier to focus on what really matters on the screen. Taking this small step could pave the way for much-needed improvements in loot management, enhancing the overall gameplay experience for everyone.
I also believe the community would be more than happy with a simple API or modding option to handle this, rather than waiting for a fully developed UI. Many of us are comfortable working with JSON configs or other basic scripting formats, and being able to customize our loot filters through something like that would be a huge win. In fact, this could foster even more community interaction as players share their custom filters and settings with each other. It doesn’t have to be overly complex, just giving us the tools to manage the clutter ourselves would be a massive improvement and a great way to empower the player base.

i just grab all the consumables first (potions of any type just drink them) or… get a loot filter, people don’t seem to be getting banned for using them. but it looks so cheesy to me, when a HR drops it’s extra big and easier to click. yawn. sort of part of the fun imo.
and we already automatically pick up gold ^^
imagine you have to click on every coin
That’s what I do as well.
During a pub Baal run someone called me a n00b for picking up all that stuff.
Many posters here agree. Looks like another useful change which won’t be implemented.
Now don’t mention cain and act 5 in one sentence …

I believe the issue is D2:R running with the original game as its “heart”. Whatever works for Resurrected graphics must also work with the original 800x600 graphics. There isn’t a lot of screen real-estate to work with on the original graphics.
I can see it right now, complaints about Resurrected graphics having an item view advantage over the original graphics mode, just because some choose to play D2:R with the original graphics.
There are other things they could do that would work with both display modes, such as item label “stacking” for commonly dropped items, like potions. For example, if there are 5 Greater Health Potions, instead of displaying them like:
Greater Health Potion
Greater Health Potion
Greater Health Potion
Greater Health Potion
Greater Health Potion
They could instead be displayed like this:
Greater Health Potion (5)
And when you click on it, it picks up the closest potion of the stack. If more of the same potion comes into view, the (#) changes accordingly.
Will Blizzard ever do that?

Meh, the same could be said about the increased screen resolution letting you see/teleport/whatever farther and letting you move around while having both the inventory and character screen open and stuff, yet I’ve seen like two or three people total asking for legacy resolution to be increased to D2R resolution. Non-parity between legacy and D2R view is a non-issue IMO.
With loot filters, while it’s nice to change the color or text of item labels, the core issue remains: only 32 item labels can be displayed at once. For me, loot filters would only make sense if we had the ability to outright hide certain items from view. The ability to change colors is great, but it’s not a real solution to the clutter.
Part of the fun in Diablo 2 is getting into the flow of farming and grinding, a rhythm that few other games can replicate. But when I have to constantly interrupt that flow to zoom in, pick up, and toss away junk items just to clear up space for better drops, that immersion is completely broken.
A proper filtering system could keep that flow intact, making the entire experience more enjoyable and less tedious.
well i agree, but sadly i don’t think blizzard themselves will actually change anything on that front for us. so it’s either finding the right loot filter for you, or using all the consumables you can / picking up tps and IDs … i dunno. wish it weren’t so.
Completely agree…
32 cap is value from Riva TNT2 graphic cards and Pentium II 80MHz PCs era…
It’s unplayable to farm high density areas with players 8 split MF farm - which most people do…
Blizzard please fix!
Perhaps we should make a poll on ‘bug’ section and spread it through community or something? ;/
That does not seem like big change in code - i bet it’s hard-coded in one point in the game…
It’s not that it’s impossible to make the change, it’s that the game is more or less abandoned. Getting bug fixes is already a miracle in itself, but new/altered features seems pretty implausible. There are other seemingly minor changes that they aren’t going to make either, not because they are in any way bad, or even due to how complex they are, like optional displays of item level and area level.
I’d also urge for caution as to expectations as to how simple it is to change a display limit or an item filter. A mistake in those could cause way more problems than expected.
There’s somehow no filters available for D2R loot. You can’t even do anything client side to clean up the screen and focus on drops worth your attention. It’s incredibly stupid and makes D2R worse than a myriad of privately hosted D2 servers.
Actually you can use loot filter mods on singleplayer… There’s no problem with that, very easy.
But you can’t change 32 item limit shown - as far as i know.
