Why did Mephisto stay?

He may be the Lord of Hate, but he stayed at Kurast to stall the Adventurer for his younger siblings? Despite being sealed there for so long.

That’s his kingdom is it not?

He may “technically” be sealed, but the whole of Kurast got corrupted whilst he was sealed and basically became his domain. He stayed as he should to defend it maybe?

he didn’t want to kill himself to get to the next act

he Hates moving… he is the lord of hate after all.

in all seriousness though he can’t get to the portal because the bridge doesn’t form until he dies and he can’t leave out the door to level 2 because we have all seen how bad he is at going around the moat.

to provide some endgame grind opportunities for a loot hungry d2 player

But seriously, is there some resource that explains the lore during the “gameplay” events?
Like what is andariel and duriel are doing there?
For the first playthrough I went through every npc dialogue I could find, but I don’t think it’s explained.

IIRC Cain has something to say about that in one of his topics…but you have to stay a while and listen.

EDIT: found it.

Thanks! I swear I tried to listen, but might have missed some “after initiation” or “early return” texts.

He hates that his brothers escaped and not him since he cant float over the moat
