to add a profanity filter that you cannot turn off on a rated M game full of gore?

The auto profanity filter when you type is annoying. I have no idea why it is there
However, even with a filter, Blizzard has not allowed profanity in their games since around 2004. The game is rated M for content the game maker created and was rated - none of which is language for D2 or D2R… Player generated content (chat and names) is not rated and is subject to Blizz policy which is rather family friendly.
So even if they remove the filter, or make it a toggle, you still want to watch it in public chats. You get reported and the GMs confirm it based on the logs, you can be Silenced. Keep anything colorful to private chat. They don’t go looking for violations so keep the friends chat to groups that are good with what you say.

i understand being uptight about the more “spicy” words but they are going over the top with it.
the esrb has never rated online interaction though they now(since 2018-ish) do specify broadly what type of interaction is in a game for parents.

it’s all about giving people access to tools (in this case words) and enough people have abused those tools in way that blizzard doesn’t like that it ruined it for the rest of us.
The ESRB is a joke. Self regulation doesn’t work.
You are talking about the same organization that rated Fifa E for everyone despite having real money paid gambling minigames that literally mimic the kind of games you would see in a casino, and rated pokemon 18+ because it has a gambling minigame with almost no valuable reward that could be played for a tiny amount of in game currency.
Okay but I’m not talking about the extreme, and I dont care whether people do use profanity in the extreme way, thats why there should be a filter.
But if I’m in a private game, and like another user has said, want to simply say that a baal drop was dog$#!T, then I should be able to as an adult, playing an adult video game. It’s just silly.
i don’t disagree the esrb isn’t super useful imo but people keep using their ratings as a reason to say things should or shouldn’t be in the game.
the problem is the online verses offline thing.
In pokemon the gambling wasn’t an online feature it was part of the gameplay vs in fifa it is online, again they don’t rate the online experience just offline and technically fifa doesn’t have gambling in the game without being online.’
again i don’t care for fifa’s ratings but seeing as the don’t rate the online experience fifa would get an e for being a soccer game and pokemon got an 18+ for having gambling in the single player.
I don’t make the rules the esrb uses nor do i agree with them but that is the bottom line.
if that games creator(s) deem you able to you can, you are only entitled to what you buy if that includes the lack of communication tools for all or just some communication that’s up to the people who made the game.
in response you can choose not to buy something or play it if it doesn’t have the features you want but you aren’t entitled to it.
The fact they consider real money lootboxes to be fine and a slot machine paid for by a minuscule amount of in game currency to be on par with adult rated games (its 18+, not just M…) is beyond ludicrous.

they are not rating the game based on lootboxes they do not rate the online experience as i keep saying.
Such a weird response. I think its obvious we aren’t entitled to whatever we individually want in a game? I think that much is extremely obvious, honestly not sure your point.
This is my favorite game, has been since its initial release in 2000. I will continue to be playing it regardless of a profanity filter. I just said it was silly, feels very out of place for the game, and should be optional.
yeah i agree it would be nice but i also really don’t see the harm in it i have yet to type something that triggered the filter other than when i was testing a word to see what it did.
10-15 years ago it probably would have upset me though.
The rating system is supposed to let parents know whether a game will be ok for their children or not. That’s the point of it. That’s the reason it was created in the first place.
Calling a game with mechanics designed to encourage gambling addiction “E for everyone” just because you have to have an internet connection to access the lootboxes is ludicrous.
The lootboxes make the industry insane amounts of money. That’s why the ESRB doesn’t do anything about it. Sure slap a label saying “includes in app purchases” like it’s going to change anything. In app purchases includes dlc, most games get that label now. If they were being honest it would be “includes lootboxes that encourage gambling addiction”
Sure there isn’t much harm in it except the censoring of specific triggered words or phrases in the context of a sent game message, which is kind of annoying every time I see it, but also isn’t the profanity filter optional in WoW, a rated T game, with no gore?

yes but the internet was still relatively niche only 2% of households even had internet and far fewer games used it so they didn’t really design the rating system to include it.
i have already said i don’t think the esrb is very useful.
The way they rate games is outdated and flawed in my opinion but that doesn’t change the fact of what it is.
which is a system for rating the offline version of a game with mild warnings pertaining to online play (which have gotten more clear since 2017 or 2018 when they added in stuff like a tag that says it contains online purchases or online communication)
yes the filter is optional in wow, no the T rating that wow had doesn’t include the online interaction (don’t ask me how they determine what is or is not an “online interaction” in an mmo). and the T rating actually includes gore and is specifically stated as part of wow

It may not determine an online experience but the developers/Blizzard can’t be ignorant to the fact that one game, with no gore, allows a mature language filter, and another game with extreme gore, doesn’t.
I think that should raise some eyebrows like “hmm this is pretty inconsistent from our other less violent and less mature games”
I think that’s weird and feels extremely out of place especially in Diablo… Again, just a minor thing I would prefer not be in the game at all but it doesn’t make me dislike the game. I just don’t feel like it FITS in the game.
i actually kind of hope they are a bit ignorant to the fact one game doesn’t have a toggleable filter while the other does or i fear they might add one that can’t be toggled to wow some day (not that i know if i will ever play it again)
yeah but i think the case would be made by higher ups that they should just be using a heavier hand on the more mild games not a lighter hand on the more mature.
