I was big WW Barb player in old D2, ran them all, DW, poley, IK. WW was my thing.
Finally built some decent gear to play my WW barb in D2:R, and it feels…bad. Am I missing something in this?
Here’s what happens. on my PC (mouse/kb), old D2 I could hold down the left mouse button, and when I clicked WW on the right button, it would whirl, and when the WW was done, it would keep me moving forward if I held down the Left button. Felt very smooth.
Now in D2:R, after WW is done, my barb stops. I have to left click again to get him moving. I can do it by releasing the left button while he’s whirling and press it again, but that feels horrible. It’s this really bad left-right-left-right thing instead of the old smoother hold down left, and right click when necessary.
I hope I’m just missing some odd setting, because this could drive me away from my WW barb. If I am, please edumacate me, I want my smooth WW back.

I played a ton of WW barb in classic D2 as well and you’re not wrong.
It feels bad.
My barb stops and auto attacks random mobs between whirls when holding down the mouse button and just in general it feels off.
I still love WW barb, but the experience in d2r isn’t very good.
I use it on the right mouse button, If you click behind the group and hold the button, then move the cursor around to sweep up the mobs it doesn’t stop, as long as you don’t click a monster it doesn’t stop until you run out of mana

Are you guys desyncing by any chance?
Not only am I experiencing this weird movement thing that’s in the thread - if I keep trying to move out It’ll animation lock me and then I start teleporting.
I’m on an assassin but I would imagine since the skill is the same it would be pretty similar for more players than just me. Despite all the server problems I don’t think I’ve lagged at all and now this is happening almost every other cast.
It still works like how you described on a controller and it’s also much smoother since you’re not limited to 16+ directions on a analog stick. Barb in general is much easier on a controller in my opinion. I know, should work like that on KB/M as well but Barb has so many issues as is (Frenzy on a controller is busted for starters)
It could be that your attack rating is super low so you’re not hitting the mobs.
Could also be that you haven’t hit the speed breakpoint with WW yet either.
WW feels just like it should , again, that’s my point of view.
I never said anything about missing mobs.
I complained about getting target locked mid whirlwind.
Yeah, it’s got nothing to do with missing mobs because of your AR. Something about the ability is getting us locked up / desynced.

I thought maybe it had to something do to with blocking but I get the issue on all difficulties / with and without a shield, claw block, etc.
I’m getting more used to it now. the left click thing still feels weird, but it’s been long enough since I played original D2 that I can’t say for certain if it was a thing back then or not.
Desync is definitely a pain. Also the pathing target lock. But I’ve been able to get to the point that I enjoy my WW again. just needs some polish.

I just tried my barb on the old version/account on another PC to see whats up. I really can’t see a difference. Left click requires you to hold the shift key in both games, and you can do it continuously until mana runs out. Granted, there is a slight skip at start stop points but this is also the same in both games. Going smoothly back and forth requires a bit of manipulation with the mouse movement - again - same in both games.
Also of course if you click on a monster you will stop, and if you click on a monster running away you will occasionally desync into the next area it runs into.
The thing that fooled me building a barb from scratch again in D2R, was how terrible it was hitting until I went to dual wielding with weapons that were fast enough to hit the best breakpoint speed.
Yeah, DW is much easier on the blood pressure, especially at early levels. My IK barb has no issues, but He’s got everything he needs.
My DW WW Barb is still leveling, and hitting those WW breakpoints really matters at those levels, especially if your Life or Mana leech is relatively low.

It feels like there is something wrong with targeting “free space”
Even when I load up classic it’s easier to control WW without getting target locked and stopping on a mob. I almost have to click way past the enemy, which is damage loss. The old “triangle pattern” doesn’t work as well.
I’ve been using controller all this time so i went and checked what the problem is. WW on a mouse is way more janky. The difference is in pathing (push vs pull) On a controller i don’t have to worry about accidentally breaking WW animation, which happens on mouse very often. If any of you have a controller, give it a try and you’ll notice the difference right away.
I honestly don’t have these issues? Right click ww is smooth so long as you don’t target lock.
I wish I had something more productive to say for the people experiencing this phenomenon. That being said ww barb and wind Druid are the only two characters I didn’t gear in old school so this is my first true ww barb. It’s very possible it preformed differently back then and I’m just ignorant to the changes. Regardless I hope you all get it sorted out, best of luck.
Its most definately different. I played a ww barb to ladder back in 2000. When you ww’ed and held on to the mouse button, it would never stop. Now, it stops and starts hitting the mob with normal attack, and its happening so often that it’s put me in near death scenarios countless times, especially when i play hc exclusively.
I initially thought it was me having a skill issue due to not playing for years, but then i googled and saw people experiencing the exact same problem.
In short, WW tends to stop and normal attack monsters EVEN if the mouse button is held down - this was NEVER the case before.
This is EXACTLY whats happening to me and its making it very difficult to play.
