Did you hear that Diablo 4 is getting annual expansions?
It’s crazy to think that the people who want an expansion for this remastered 23 year old Blizzard North game actually TRUST Blizzard as they are right now to make an expansion without wrecking the game. You really want them touching this game beyond bugfixes and community inspired QoL, item and character balancing? I sure as hell don’t.
If you want infusions of “new”, there are other games that get that dose of “new” on a regular basis… As far as Blizzard games, World of Warcraft is a good example. As Shawmeck mentioned, Diablo 4 is getting annual expansions. And there are pleeeeenty of other games from other developers that do the same thing. So there you go, you have options.

it would have to be a hell of a 180 from that turd of a devteam for d4 come expansion time for me to continue giving them money…
i´m holding out for d5 instead. maybe then the ip gets a new actually competent team. there´s bound to come along other alternatives anyway.

D5 will be casual-friendly dog poo with even more aggressive monetisation than D4.
Good long lasting ARPGs are inherently casual-unfriendly (low drop rates, hard difficulty, complicated itemisation/economy/trading). It makes no sense for Blizzard to work hard on a good ARPG to attract a relatively small ARPG fanbase instead of a much larger casual audience. It’s an easy decision for Blizz. Casuals are easy to satisfy with mediocre gameplay content. Periodic milking is also easier with content releases like their annual D4 expansions because the casuals’ expectations are lower.

We don’t need another expansion for D2R. All we really need is an ultimate QoL package and several good changes to balance the game a little bit more. New expansion will only make the worse of it. D2 storyline is finished.

D4 is where all updates are now, this game is maintenance mode only.
It will not happen, and I will tell you why.
D2 is created by Blizzard North, an independent studio that asked Bliizard to help fund and release the sales of their game, Diablo series. Sometimes after d2lod is released, the team got into conflicts with blizzard team themselves so blizzard North is disbanded. The original d3 was scraped completely and redone by the wow team…to proof that “they can be better than blizzard north”. Except d3 was a complete failure when launched, it was redempt with the expansion pack. And now d4 is re-walking the d3 path.
If they making an expension for d2r, not only will we be having storyline issue (we already have immortal to fill the gap between d2 and d3, like it or not), it would also be served as the solid proof that blizzard North is better than Blizzard, something they will never admit. They would rather put d2r in maintanence mode, continue pushing thu d4 than giving us an exp at all.
Besides you should be glad at at the very least they ain’t putting in game shop in d2r. If they are going to make an exp, it will not be exp, but a dlc with season pass slap onto it.

I would have liked some of David Brevik’s ideas, before the closure of blizzard north, to be or have been released in the game, such as the cleric class.

There were no such information about D2, but D3 is going into maintenance mode after the next season (29th). Read the last sentence, it suggests the same fate for D2:

No you don’t want an expansion, there is no one competent enough at blizzard to make one.

A optional expansion similar to how you could choose between LoD and Classic would be nice.
People could choose to get into it or stick with “classic LoD”.
When microsoft aquired Blizzard, Sony was worried Microsoft would make CoD Xbox exclusiv, which would make them lose 8-12 Billions each title.
200 millions is a wet fart for Blizzard. Not great sales.

Hire the folks over at Project Diablo and make a great Diablo 2 expansion.

Yes. Diablo 2 was designed in an era where you were either a gamer, or not. Casuals didn’t really exist.
They used to make games for gamers. Now games are made to appeal to masses to make quick sales off of people who will play for 2 weeks and forget all about it.

Yeah, tell that to the PoE developers. A very popular game. PoE 2 will probably be even more popular by the looks of it.
