Blizzard, there are a lot of MAC players that would love to have D2R for Mac. If you need instructions on how to do it:
There’s no incentive for Blizzard to port the game to Apple for a few reasons:
1: Compared to Windows players, the number of potential players on a Mac are miniscule in comparison. They might sell a few thousand copies, Whoopi Goldberg might even be one of them… Which probably wouldn’t cover the paid manhours needed to port the game.
2: Then there’s the hurdles that Apple has in place for software developers to jump over in order for software to be “Apple Approved”. This would be additional work that Blizzard likely doesn’t want to do… Just to sell a few thousand more copies of the game.
3: After the game is purchased, Diablo 2 doesn’t make Blizzard any money.
Save yourself the headaches… Get a Windows computer to play games on. You can build a monster of a gaming system for what you’d shell out for an Apple system anyway.
How can you say this. Do you have any relevant numbers? There are 100 million MAC users in the us. If 15% of them played LOD, they would be interested, just like I am.
15 million * $39.99 = $599,850,000.00 dollars. If that is not significant, then I do not know what is. This is 1/10 of Blizzard’s profits last year (2022) for all the games.
Where is this hate coming from. I complied 32 bit software for 64 bit’s systems before. It is not that hard.
The problem is Apples hurdles for bringing software to their “App Store” platform, which by the way takes roughly 1/3 of a cut on what the program sells for. If they were easier to work with as far as making programs that are “Apple Approved”, then I’m sure Blizzard would do it.
You do not have to use Apple Store to sell Mac Software.
You brag that you drive a Porsche 911 and have 10 Mac systems… But you don’t want to drop some bank on a Windows system. As I said before, save yourself the headaches and drop some bank on a nice Windows gaming setup. You can’t beat the compatibility of a Windows system.
Wow dude youre a d1ck.
If you have that kind of money just buy a PC
So where are you getting this “100 million Mac users” number? I am PRETTY SURE there are not that many people using Mac desktop+laptop computers. That sounds more like it may be more like the total number of people using an Apple device period, including iPhones and iPads, which have historically had multiple times more users than their desktops and laptops.
I can’t use windows. I am not productive on it. Why is Windows so important to you?
It’s a game, software with some nice graphics.
Who said anything about being productive on a GAMING SETUP? Come on now.
The question is, why are you avoiding Windows? Some subconscious Apple fanboy blood pact agreement you had with your Porsche buddies?
I use a Windows PC, and I have an iPhone. Why? Because they both serve their purpose well for me. Why do I not have an Apple computer? Because they’re stupid expensive, and lack the hardware AND software compatibility that I’m after.
Google says:
Where we are in the US today, Macs account for 31.34% of US desktop operating systems, while Windows has fallen to 53.43%.
Doing a bit of my own investigation, the numbers have changed pretty dramatically over the last couple years. According to Statcounter, it sounds like your numbers are correct, somehow. To be honest, I so surprised by those numbers that I’m rather skeptical of their accuracy.
For a different take centered on video games though, looking at the Steam Hardware Survey page for last month shows Windows as 96.77% of the systems being used while MacOS is only 1.79%. Those numbers sound much, much closer to my expectations.
This problem has been around for as long as apple has tried strong arming devs to use their software.
It’s not happening. If you really want to play on your mac you can run windows on a hard drive on your mac. But you will have game latency issues.
Edit: seems Apple now allows you to download Windows without the need of 3rd part software. So there ya go
When I worked Tech Support at my college as a student worker, Macs were really big in the Psychology and maybe Biology departments about 2 decades ago. They seemed decently popular with students, and I think even more so now.
They are also really big in the graphics design industry. So I could see his 30% percent of desktop/laptop being correct.
I do think your Steam Hardware Survey is a much more relevant number though, since it focuses on actual gamer users.
This has been brought up a lot of times on the forum, here’s a few threads which had really good insight/discussion, from what I remember when I read them at the time:
Bottom line is Acti-Blizzard has the ability to do a much more in depth ROI study than all of us “outsiders” on this forum. They can estimate how much it would cost to do the development, deal with the road blocks Apple has put in place, and can estimate their potential profits. They are a business with the goal of earning money. So the fact that they have stopped Mac support for legacy D2, and never included it in D2R, to me, says they have done the math and decided it doesn’t make sense.
I couldn’t play wow on my mac so i downloaded some… winebottler or whatever it was called. How safe and good that is i have no idea but wow ran fine and addons worked.
Now, how you can prefer mac over windows is beyond me. Even for work. The time i had mac was the worst time in my life for both work and gaming.
Considering i am as technical as your average 80 year old you should be able to make it work.
This is the problem with Apple computers… besides the fact that they are very expensive for what you get. Why not just run Windows for Mac?
On a side note, the post TheDarkJedi linked was funny. I also have a Porsche 911 (Carrera 4S)… and an Audi R8 GT (#287/333)… and a Mercedes-AMG GTS (Street Mod Time Attack Racecar). I have two Windows PCs for my VR room (Valve Index and HP Reverb G2 sim setup) and a Windows PC for gaming, and two other Windows PCs for work.
People that have Macs don’t necessarily have more money.
This argument is incredibly flawed for numerous reasons:
#1 Not everyone is a gamer. Just because you’re an Apple user doesn’t mean you have any interest in playing games
#2 D2R is already available on 6 platforms. How many of them are also Apple users? How many of them are actually held back from buying it simply because it isn’t on Mac?
#3 How many people have any interest in the series at all? The original Diablo 2 sold 4 million copies and D2R has sold 5 million. That’s quite a small percent of the 7.888 billion people in the world. The original Diablo 2 was even available on Mac but didn’t see huge numbers.
Could go on but why bother? I’m sure some people would buy it if it was ported but not enough to justify the cost. It is available on 6 platforms already and as someone pointed out with the Steam sales, only a very small percentage of people on Macs are playing games on them. Buy a platform that supports it. Sounds like that shouldn’t be an issue for you.
they totally should release this game for Mac. I use a Wine based install, but the performance could be soo much better.
They have D3 for Mac, but I don’t care about D3 >.<, I want D2R.
You should totally get a Windows system, then you’d realize how much Apple has taken your wallet to the bank while also restricting you on what you can do with the system that you paid for.
You get that? You pay absurdly high prices for a computer… But you can’t do the things you want to do with it because the Apple overlords who built your computer won’t allow it.
Or…
You can pay the same amount and build a Windows system that is 3 times better and have the freedom to do whatever you want on it.
It amazes me that people still buy Apple computers. Their phones are great… Their computers are overpriced garbage in a pretty aluminum frame.
There may be millions of mac owners but majority are using their macs for business and dont game, not everyone plays games on thier pc or mac, let alone d2r
