Never played ladder in vanilla D2/LoD, so now I’m curious as to what’s the benefit of playing ladder, apart from ladder-only runewords that (to my understanding) will eventually transfer over to non-ladder anyway.
In D3 you have the benefits of more stash space if you completed enough seasonal “objectives”, along with leader boards for grift clears, transmogs, portraits, etc.
D2 (and now D2R evidently) have the problem of third-party websites such as d2jsp obviating the inherent “everyone starts fresh” functionality, so yeah, I’m curious as to what’s the upside of playing ladder in this game.
Not criticizing or anything, just curious.
A leaderboard that shows whose been running their bot the longest.
Maybe they add some new features, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

There really is no advantage any more. In fact, it will be quite a frustrating experience, thanks to the limit of 20 characters per battle.net account. When you take in consideration the need for ladder-only mules, in addition to actual playing characters, coupled with the non-ladder characters and mules, almost everyone will be running out of character slots in no time.
And all for what? To compete with bots playing 24/7 to get a mention on the top 1000? That’s the only incentive remaining, and I’m not sure how big a draw that will be.
Meh, I used to only play D2 in ladder. Now, thanks to all the changes, I’m playing D2R in a way I never played D2. This is definitely NOT the “D2 experience I knew and loved - preserved…”

I’m not here to talk s*** about JSP, but a lot of these guys have accumulated FG with the use of bots over the last 5 - 10 years. I think in the last 5 years of LOD vanilla’s lifespan, most people were using bots instead of farming self found.
I don’t think FG is a bad concept and I think Blizzard should make their own official FG.
Ladders are primarily a progression-race between players that have the same time-based opportunity to stay ahead of the curve. That is why the leaderboard exists.
Ladders in D2R will be even shorter (3 months) than they were in Classic D2 so there will be a heavy emphasis on the players who no life the game. However, it will still be fun for everyone else to try and keep up with them.
The value of items in the market are also restored due to the item pool starting from scratch. At the end of a ladder all of the characters get dumped into non-ladder and everyone starts over again.
Mostly the fresh economy thing.
It creates an incentive for a large amount of people to return to the game which makes playing online a bit more fun for some people. Even with sites like jsp the economy is still fresh, trading is easier, item values are vastly different. Though I’ve never used jsp, I imagine something like an enigma will be much cheaper on nonladder.
I don’t know if it’s actually implemented but ladder is supposed to be more challenging as well.
It’s like a new launch, everyone’s playing and the game is more alive, for a time anyway. In the end the best place to play will probably be wherever the most people are playing.
There is no attraction, but there is no doubt that when the ladder is released, it will mean that the client and server have been stable enough for hc players to play. This is what I look forward to.
It’s just a new start, but I agree without ladder only runewords and gear it seems kind of pointless. Maybe they did that because they intend to add season mechanics and new ladder only stuff? I think that would be amazing but it’s best case scenario. I personally get bored of d2 without ladders.
XP needs to be adjusted. It wasn’t horrendous before 1.10 Patch to race till 99lvl.
I wouldnt do from 98lvl to 99lvl for 200 hours with 8 players, that’s pointless.
