It is one of the components to trigger the Pandemonium Event where the unique charm Hellfire torch large charm drops (+10 to + 20 attributes, +10 to +20 resist all, +3 to all skills only for a particular class)
If you try to sell it individually, it typically goes for around Lem to Pul.
Also needed is the Key of Hate off the Summoner (Act 2) and Key of Destruction off Nilathak (Act V).

Not even close.
Tal amy usually goes for around 2 Ist (as low as Ist, as high as Vex).
You would likely need around at least 3 key sets (1 of each of the 3 keys so 3 x 3) that could sell for one Ist.
So you would likely need 6 of each keys (18 total) to get the needed rune currency to buy a normal Tals amy but obviously if you find someone desperate enough, anything is possible.

shouldn’t even be worth any runes. You can literally farm up sets of keys in a single day. You can’t go and farm multiple Ist runes in a day.Weird
Feel free to try and farm Nilathak who has approx 1 in 12 chance to drop his key. Make sure to bring Nature’s Peace ring (unless you want to use Salvation) to not getting killed by his corpse explosion (and hope you don’t get one-shotted by his Tomb Vipers if they spawn).
if i get the full set of keys, what do i do?
and is the torch guaranteed to be for my class, or do i just hope it is, and hope to trade it for the right one if it’s not?

so keys if you get 3 of em can be used in a crafting to help out via uber farming, Long hard process by hard / end game type content.
1 key can sometimes get you a ko-pul, but normaly you need to sell 3 of them to get something decent.
the torch is random.
One key set if put in the cube and your in Act V Harrogath will open a portal (one to either Lilith, Duriel or Azual), beating them they’ll drop one of the 3 organs. Opening all 3 portals in the same game guarantees that you will always fight them (if you open them in different games, you might get the same boss). Then put the 3 different organs in the cube and that opens portal to Uber Tristram where you fight Uber Mephisto, Uber Baal, and Uber Diablo. Beating the last of them will drop a single Hellfire Torch which is for a random class and random stats (and also a Standard of Heroes, 1 for each player which presently has no use that we know of).
Pretty easy to farm him as a bone necro. Not a big deal. Yeah, the drop rate is lower so you’re going to have to run him multiple times. But again, you could play for 10+ hours straight killing everything in sight and never see an Ist rune. You WILL however have the keys eventually drop for you in a single day.
Well I know for those who don’t yet have a hellfire torch, it is very easy to find a trade game where if you have 4 key sets (4 of each of the 3 keys), you can likely trade for an un-IDed torch. Most non-Pally/Sorc torches could likely be traded straight up for 4 x 3 key sets.
honestly at this point most torches not Pally or sorc go for about 3x3 keysets unless a high roll
jeebus. so, after trying for weeks to trade my way up to getting tal armor, on my THIRD time levelling a sorc
tal armor drops in the mausoleum next to blood raven five minutes into hell mode
two hours later, amulet drops in maggot lair

u can probably farm countess alone or council and get an ist worth of value in runes in a similar amount of time. Yesterday I tried to farm her for just one key and literally got an ist, a mal and an um before I got 1 key ~ 20 - 30 runs. The key/torch economy is super weird imo, but torchs are still a huge jump in power and should be valuable.
Odd. You got extremely lucky getting an Um, mal and ist in one day from only Countess.
