This might be a silly question, but I’ve done some googling and can’t seem to find a consistent answer. What exactly triggers the game to save internally, ie without hitting “Save and Exit”? I’m thinking specifically of online games being played solo, but more general answers or things to do with multiplayer or offline could be useful too.
I noticed with today’s outage that even though I tried to “Save and Exit”, I lost a tiny bit of progress - the game retained my level increase from 77 to 78, but my merc was still at 77. So unless I’m misremembering the timeline of the game (possible admittedly, but I’m pretty sure of myself) it looks like game does occasionally save some stuff even if you don’t “Save and Exit”, but I can’t seem to figure out how or why. Is it just based on time intervals or does it have to do with triggers within the game, and if so, is it something that players can force through certain in-game actions?
There isn’t anything official outside of the Save and Exit option when you go to leave the game. My guess there are multiple things that trigger it like going in and out of town, or a period of time. Could be both, but with people being rolled back, the system may not save as often as many like which is causing people to lose items when the servers are taken down while people are playing.
It’s almost instant, however rollbacks can happen.
My game froze just as I killed the last monster in the den of evil, and I thought I had to do it all over again. But when I joined back in the game, I had the quest complete so it saved my progress instantly.
2 crashes ago the loot from just seconds before crash are saved
last crash an entire gambling and crafting session gone and the cube also gone for the lulz
Thanks guys. So the sense I’m getting is that no reliable way to trigger a hard save (ie where it updates your character’s information) without actually saving and exiting.
I’m pretty paranoid and have taken to saving and exiting after ever single dungeon clear, so I haven’t lost much progress thankfully. But it does take away from the experience, since you can’t really get properly immersed if you’re always popping in and out. It would be nice to just lean into a 4 or 5 hour session with no stops. But then again, I’ve read too many heartbreak stories about what people lost in rollbacks so I’m not about to risk that, haha.
If they are taking down the servers, they ((Being the Devs)) will post that the servers are coming down which it is best to get to the town and use the save and Exit, but I have seen people report they did this and they still did rollbacks that resulted in losing progress so even doing that may not prevent it.
Too bad there is no way to see this message while playing the game.
They generally do. On launch, when they had to take the servers down for a bit to fix some issues, there is a prompt in the game chat that says the servers are being brought down in 15 mins. Most people may not see it since they are not looking out for it and looking around for items or trying to stay alive.
When crash happens when people are just booted, that is not scheduled so they can’t really warn people when that happens.

Online saves as you go, but the server can take a dump on your character and you get stuck with the most recent backup.

If you crash or freeze, your character can still remain in the game and eventually be forced to exit the game, causing a save. Happens all the time. Crash and then you log in dead or missing 60% hp.
This sounds about right. Character gets saved, database takes a dump. Restore last database backup from 6 hours ago or something like that.
