Grief is OP. It’s the best melee weapon by far (excluding polearms with auras such as infinity…)
It’s ok for it to be that strong, melee characters need this kind of weapon to be competitive. But the thing that bothers me is the difference between Grief and other weapons, the difference is too big.
I saw someone mention buffing the base dmg of all exceptional weapon by 25% and elite weapons by 50%. I was curious so I made an excel spreadsheet to calculate what this implied. 50% was probably too much so I checked for 25% base dmg buff.
I compared a perfect Grief BA (superior +15%ed +400dmg) with a perfect eBotD BA (+415% ed). Turns out, a 25%base dmg buff would only increase the Grief’s dmg by 3%. Overall Grief was still better, but the difference was much smaller. The average dmg of Grief was 468 and 458 for eBotD.
What do you guys think about this?
grief is not op, the other options are just weak
The other options are weak because Grief is OP.
My sorceress with simple, easy to get gear kills cows far faster than my amazon with Windforce and Razortail. I would support buffing bows and especially crossbows, which are ridiculously slow right now.
and attack please - a lot of work has to go in to getting sufficient attack.
Also - it would only have to be minimum damage on the bases to see a buff. Max could stay the same.
Grief ruins choice, as it makes it for you.
I think if some kind of buff to the base dmg happens, some weapon need to have more than others. Amazon spears are weaker/slower than regular spears. Crossbow are slow, but their dmg is not high enough to justify using them over a bow. Same for most 2h weapon. 2h sword, axes and hammers are not worth loosing a shield, most of the time.
Bingo, there aren’t any OP melee weapons. So buffing weapons would be a good thing. I’d like a lot of Uniques buffed bring back 1.08 Grandfather give it 3 sockets etc. A lot could be done to improve weapons to where they are finally strong.
how about a chance for 6 socket cube crafting? expensive ofc…
Grief is just a big damage stick and very little else. Something like BOTD does way, way, way more for a character than just big damage, oh and it also does big damage too, btw. While yes damage is very strong/important, it’s not always the end all be all. I think Grief is fine. I think all the other weapons are fine. I think most everything in D2 is fine.
They should add new weapons mid and late game to give melee more choices and make leveling more fun. Keep the power level the same, but give different choices for different builds.
Edit spelling
I think bows were overnerfed in 1.10. The fact that demon crossbow (elite version of repeating crossbow) has less average damage, than pike (normal version), not fun at all.
My problem with increasing sockets.
- What about items like Tomb Reaver, one of the things that make it special is it’s 3 sockets.
- It will always end with people wanting to use Ohms, Shaels or 40/15 Jewels. Because it’s easy to find Deadly Strike and Crushing Blow elsewhere but hard to increase weapon speed and dmg.
Can you describes what eBotD has over Grief. From what I see not that much, both give alot of dmg and ias. Grief has 20%Deadly strike no crushing blow, eBotD, has no DS and No CB. Grief has DtU while eBotD has DTD. Both gives -25% target defense, but Grief has Ignore Target Defense. Grief has life and mana per kill, while eBotD has life and mana leach. eBotD has +30 all attribute. eBotD is better for the dual leach, but Grief has much more dmg. Is there something I dont consider? At first glance, it seems eBotD doesn’t give way more. Would you mind explaining what you have in mind?
I think they should add “Splash damage” like PD2
Grief is OP (its an outlier in the weapon category).
Honestly adding something like +1 damage and +1 attack rating as a passive per level to weapon masteries, zeal (and other respective “Core” weapon based skills) would REALLY balance out the whole “weapon damage” classes.
For example, if you have a level 30 mace mastery it would add 30 damage and 30 attack rating, which might not seem like much, but this 30 value would get scaled with ALL your other bonuses. Its simple, easy to implement, and doesn’t require “resetting” all your other runewords. FURTHERMORE, it would bump the damage of ALL runewords weapons proportionally MORE than grief!
I miss my barb with GF … =( but dammmnnnn it feel so clunky and slow to play a melee build … they really need some kind of splash dmg/ more damage … And maybe a new tooltips for pvp so they don’t bust pvp while doing this.
The problem is melee is super weak. So Greif and BOTD isn’t strong enough. I’d like to see some big 1600 dmg two hand weapons +skills other mods and some nice 1 handers with other changes so melee builds can rock. Until then they can be very subpar with low clear speed.
I’d like a 1.08 Gfather again but give it 1-3 sockets and like 1600 dmg. Things like that.
Im pretty sure Dmg added like this by a mastery would not apply to the weapon base dmg. (They could do it, but it would be more complicated) Chances are, it would function like the +max dmg of charms. It would be multiplied by the gear %ed and the skill %ed, but it wouldn’t be multiplied by weapon %ed. So it would be the same for all weapons.
To reduce the dmg difference between Grief and other weapons, the +dmg need to be multiplied by the Weapon %ed.
Thanks for this clarification. I guess I have a lot more to learn about the details and nuances of D2 calculation.
Maybe Microsoft will do it better?
