Funny. In my initial reply I only had unique elite weapons in mind when I was so quick to agree and say, “yup, most are unusable in hell.”
I guess most armors are usable, and there are a few others that are still popular, even if they are not best in slot.
Shako, for instance, definitely is not BiS, for any build, MFing or not, but it is much more common than its betters. Technically that is my opinion, though, as it does have damage reduction, which can be nice. For some builds. I guess. And is relatively rare to get. Ok, Shako might not be so bad. If you need DR.

Too many blanket statements to say “too many of these are trash.” I will concede that many uniques are usable, and even strong under certain conditions.
People exaggerate then they cry about runewords blowing the uniques all out of the water and completely changing the power levels in the game, etc. They are only focused on the best of the best runewords that are so rare they do not even exist in my gameplay. After 3 months. 
Granted, I have not attempted the Ubers with a character only using uniques and no runewords. It should be do-able with certain classes, though.
