Valkyrie - worth it?

Hey all. I have a 66 javazon in NM Act 5 and I just got around to throwing a point into Valkyrie.

She’s disappointing, and I’m not sure if more points will help.

In general, she’s just very slow to move to targets, and sometimes completely blind to them, standing around while the merc and I kill things. I can add more points to her for more hp and damage (at 1 point she does die a lot at NM), but that won’t help if she’s out to lunch.

Any advice?

Depends;

  • If you have the Peace runeword, one point in Valkyrie will make the slvl 15 from the runeword permanent, until she dies, you quit or change difficulty
  • Apparently, if you put 17 hard points in Valk, she becomes hands down the best merc/minion in the game, can basically solo Hell (according to MrLlamaSC) because of the gear she spawns with. I typically end up with about +8-10 skills by Hell, which would make her spawn at level 25-27 with 17 hard points in and she has, if I remember correctly, about 4000 hp?

I use her, the Act II NM Merc and Decoy continuously when I’m in Hell. Especially considering all of the Lightning Immunes everywhere, unless something is Lightning, Physical and Poison Immune, eventually we can kill anything. The really bothersome stuff, like the Gloams in Act V Hell, you either avoid, run past or take it extremely slowly because they are so hard to deal with. For most boss fights, I cast Decoy between me and the Boss, throw a poison/plague jav to poison the Boss (keeps them from healing for a bit), and try to position myself in front of my merc (his polearm allows him to reach past me) and next to the Valk, this arrangement keeps my merc alive and lets me CS the boss pretty quickly.

Pros:

  • She is nigh indestructible at high level, can tank anything
  • You can recast her at will, especially useful during boss fights
  • You get Decoy in addition, which can resolve aggro issues with irritants like the exploding dolls in Act III
  • You don’t have to supply her with any gear

Cons:

  • You can’t control her gear to provide desirable auras or bonuses
  • She kills slowly in Hell
  • A lot of points (7) to enable her, more +16 to make her tough enough to stand up to Hell

Thank you, that’s helpful. I’ll consider burning a re-spec.

Incidentally, which A2 merc aura do you run? I’ve got the Defiance at the moment, since zons are fragile.

Almost always a decision between might (more damage) and holy freeze (better mob control) merc. If you’re concern is being fragile get the holy freeze one as it’ll slow mobs attacks down being far more useful than a bit of extra defense.

Only time I use Valk is with Passive skills only Daggerzon

IMO if you have Infinity skip Valk, if not then skill Valk and respec once you get Infinity. Getting Java through Hell without Infinity is a chore, even with LR wand on swap.
Thats for solo play if you play in group just skip Valk.

Javazons don’t typically invest in Valk because they themselves can be pretty tanky.

Valk is a better investment for Bowazons who typically dump everything in Dex for the most damage possible and pretty much explode with the slightest touch from an enemy. Even if you try to make your Bowazon “survivable” she’s still as delicate as styrofoam. So a high level Valk really holds the line for them. Valk damage is negligible even at high levels but they never die. So I don’t think they can quite “solo Hell” but Valk is everything a Bowazon needs to stay alive and keep pewpewing without a care in the world.

And you control the Valk simply by resummoning her. Abuse this as much as you can. Cast her into every new room you move to if you want to be cautious. Cast her right on top of you if you get swarmed and run away. Cast her in front of bosses for an easier time of kiting them with Guided Arrow, etc.

You only need base 1 into Valk. With all the +skills you get by the end of the game, and all the synergies she gets from dodge skills, base 1 is plenty for her to be a tank alongside of an act 2 merc.

Valk is very useful for getting through hell unless someone is carrying you. After that I like to respect for more damage.

Doubt you need a Valk as a Javazon, but I always go max Valk on any bowazon I make. Put 5-7 points in decoy and she can be nearly unkillable.

Thing is, not all Valks are the same. They spawn with their own set of items and attributes each time you cast them. You can roughly tell which one you get depending on the color of their armor and spear. Red armor valks are the most tanky, gold being able to deal with extra fast mobs, and blue has a chance to proc frost nova when hit. There’s even a rare amp damage one, but it’s hard to care/notice the pike’s color.

I find my valk invaluable for soloing WSK Hell, together with my A2 merc.

Black Souls will zap you and try to get close and they tend to stop zapping once in Melee mode. A survivable Valk and Merc is crucial to distract the Black Souls.

Also, you an “reposition” a valk by recasting which is useful to draw crowds together for LF. With a merc you can’t unless you have teleport (enigma or tele staff).

Both the merc and valk are useless in cows though.

put more points into valkyrie. she struts around and has a nice butt. its worth it just for that.

personnaly, on my lvl 86 javazon, i have invested points to maximize the valkyrie, she is an amazing tank and can take of big lightning immune/stoneskin/immune to physical damage mobs or mana burn mobs, she’s also great in situations where you need to retreat and have a decoy who will occupy mobs long enough for you to recuperate or use a tp

the biggest con is the investement in the dodge stuff, wich animations stop you from casting lightning fury

i don’t have the gear yet to do a godly invincible javazon yet, so in the meantime, my valkyrie saved my butt more than once

useless if you’re geared and your merc is geard. That’s 4 points you could spend into doing more damage.

uh hello, i know im like 2 years late here, but this guy knows a lot about summoning builds and actually made a valkyrie build for his ama.

Hello,

If i understand well the video above, it is interesting to invest points (17) in Valkyrie to have a decent weapon

If i have the runeword peace, is it ok to invest only three points (to reach valkyrie level 17) or it’s working only with one point?

Thanks

i’m not sure if the valk spawned by peace runeword benefits from hard points in valk to be honest with you… doesn’t he talk about that at some point in the video? i only watched it once so i don’t remember since there was a lot to take in.

No, Valk from Peace is always lvl 15 and doesn’t benefit from hard points. The first point though makes her permanent when spawned though, so that is at least worthwhile.

Thanks for the answers

So, only one point is necessary. I play poison/lightning for the moment and i don’t think it’s interesting to invest 17 points.

nowdays even 1 point is not necessary

I have found that my valk from Peace does not despawn without a hard point in it. I think they changed it in some of the resurrected patches
