Unpopular Opinion: Teleport is too OP

Teleport is so OP that they had to create an item to give teleport to other classes. I know I know… “don’t touch my easy button” but I do wonder how different the game would be if either Teleport had a Cooldowm

You can’t teleport through walls.

Either way, I know it’s not going away, but it’s funny how basically the whole endgame revolves around that skill

Cooldown on teleport - one of things made me hate D3 (together with free respecs, no skill tree, no stats distribution, weapon based spell damage, no monster immunities, high drop rate, personal loot, difficulty slider, Lea, butterflies, demons always telling their plans and some other).

You could suggest reducing teleport cast rate (just ligh chain lightning). This fits D2 more. But… All that solutions just make teleport a clunky skill. But I though everyone want convenient play, not the opposite. Fast teleporting is vital for sorceress.

Quadruple the base mana cost of teleport. Easy fix. 96 mana to teleport at level 1. Each level reduces the cost by 4 until it reaches 1 mana per cast.

Pumping up the teleport skill to reduce mana cost and/or increasing the mana pool and running with an Insight merc allows you to teleport more. With enigma and +12 to skills, it’d still cost 48 mana to teleport. Teleport level 25+ would be 1 mana per cast.

We’ll be right back to quaffing mana potions then.

Another mana reduction mechanic per skill point would be to reduce the cost by 15% for each additional level. Level 30 would be the first level to reduce it below 1 mana per cast. Level 13 would be a more manageable 13.65 mana per cast, as opposed to 12 now.

I am an old school d2 player, and I do agree that teleport is OP. And there are several different ways to balance it.

If D2R would really be a “live” game like said by blizzard, I’d love to see balance changes, new rune words, new items, along with new end-game contents, comming with each new season.

Teleport by its self is not OP and actually not as good as you think it is.
The reason you think its “OP” is because people have faster cast rate & faster hit recovery
that allows you to teleport quickly and move quicker if you’ve been hit. If anyone ever tried teleport all on its own, you’d see its slow and it clunky an not that great.

The problem isn’t with teleport itself but rather the people crying about it’s appearance while in combination of other stats that let it appear as if teleport is OP when it is not.

Lots of things are OP in this game, thats what makes it fun.

Crushing Blow is OP cuz you can just bring down any monsters HP with % damage.

Corpse Explode is OP cuz 1 point lets you do % damage that scales with monster HP.

Cloak of Shadows is OP cuz you can disable the entire screen with 1 point for over 5 seconds.

Hammerdin is OP cuz almost nothing is immune to his extremely high damage.

Spirit is OP cuz almost every spell caster uses it.

Harlequin Crest is OP cuz almost every build uses it.

If you want to return to a time when Teleport was not everywhere (except sorceress) play the pre expansion version of the game.

I think the Mai issue with me is that it is an ez mode to grind and farm bosses… if they didn’t give teleport to the other classes, people would have complained a lot more.

I would be thrilled for a 1.09d version!! No more “mandatory” OP runewords. 1.10 was the reason back then, I began playing offline only, and played nothing but 1.09d on and off through the years. :grinning:

there’s this thing called enigma and this thing caled teleport staff you know.

Teleport is not OP.

Lets look at the sorc. All their damage is elemental. I dual spec and the damage from maxed fireball is horrible even with 1 +7 from gear in fire mastery and 10 in fire bolt. Sorceresses NEED teleport the way it is because thats the only way they can skip mobs that are immune.

If teleport changes then Immune monsters need to go. Otherwise it would be devastating for the sorc class.

The sorc is also a glass cannon. She dies in 1-2 hits even fully geared. If teleport had any sort of cooldown it would kill the class.

Teleport is OP but it’s also FUN. Also with enough FRW particularly on Barbs, Paladins, Amazons, and Assassins, can basically keep up with teleport if not go even faster (out in the open). Finally, there are plenty of teleport options for other classes to use, not just Enigma, teleport circlets, amulets, weapons, you name it. Please do not nerf FUN, that is the opposite of what we should want.

They should just give every character a teleport ability. When I started the game my entire journey was me and 7 sorc. And for good reason, they have a massive advantage as a starting character who can mf well. It’s not worth making anything else as ur first character or your handicapped form the start. They need to give everyone the same teleport ability so we see more even spread for starting characters.

Idk, you are right but what really are you fixing nerfing teleport? Then sorceress becomes barely played, and insert new character/meta takes it’s place.
Teleport is powerful, but let’s not act like it’s zero skill to use it. I’ve died tons of times teleporting into packs of enemies, or walls, or a big lag spike. It’s a skill you develop with practice. I’d take this kind of skill and the convenience of speed vs whatever new meta took it’s place.
There is always a min-max meta. Nerfing teleport moves it somewhere else I guess. Maybe everyone plays paladins next

I do wonder sometimes if the game would have been better overall if it was not in the original decades ago.

Teleport is not OP, it is useful however. Personally I think it’s a skill reserved for the sorce, hence I only play non-expak.

Solution is to make a Sorc and you can stop complaining?
I see no problem with it
They will never give it to all characters.
Or you can always get a staff with teleport charges
Or there is alwasys the most complained item Enigma, this is how they have given it to every class

Teleport is most broken skill in D2 and even more broken in D2R due to 16-19:9. All D2 meta is around Teleport. If someone comparing Teleport to other skills then that someone is just funny and doesnt know this game. We all know why most ppl choose Sorc as starter, why Blizzard added Enigma and why Enigma is most desirable item in this game. Just think, imgaine removing Teleport from Enigma, it would make Enigma more balanced and swappable, while removing all mods from Enigma except Teleport would make it still OP and BoS item. OFC Im not for removing Teleport from Enigma cuz it would make Sorc even more absolete.
D2 Teleport is simply GOD mode on, but its OK, its fun to be a GOD, but problem is this GOD feeling too early and ez accessible for Sorc and dumbing down the game Imo cuz for me the best part of D2 is early SLOW progression, that dark atmosphere feeling.

I think OP Tele as end game OK! OP Tele on fresh start in early progression is BAD. Teleport on only one item which make this item BoS is BAD too.

It can be ez fixed by Teleport nerf and adding Teleport to more items (uniue rings/amulets, staffs. Nerfed Teleport wouldnt be a problem as accssible skill for all class on mid game, at this point Sorc can be buffed slightly (unused skills) to get more options, also spending some points in energy become more sense, so nerfed Teleport is fix for a lot of problems, including full ultra wide support and annoying NL.

How “fix” Teleport and do not break core game mechanics?? There is only one option: make it radius based, 1lvl as a very short area and mana cost should incrasing by 2 for every +lvl with 1 radius increase. Why not simple mana cost increase to eg 84-96? Because Tele is 18lvl skill and that huge cost simply doesnt fit to mid lvl skill, it could match to a 30lvl skill.

What items naturally fit to get Teleport? Soj, rune word “Memory”.
