Unique Item Revamp

The developers did a good job increasing the usefulness of set items and making them more prominant in Patch 2.4. However, unique items are still completely outclassed by runewords, which is a shame as they have some of the most beautiful artwork in the game and are mostly unused by players. With that said, I would like to share my thoughts about buffing unique items (elite versions) for future Patch 2.5…

I get what you mean about revamping items but the thing is those Items used to be like runewords, powerful.Most items anyways.Even a ballista was concidered baller back in the day.It was an item every bowazon wanted(besides WindForce but hardly anyone had them).When runewords came out they buffed the heII out of the bosses a little later.Items like shako and stuff were top tier items and became easy to farm like in d2r.Finding a shako pre 1.10 was like finding a JAH rune,literally.Along with most top items and Tyraels Might was almost unheard of finding 1.10 and on.The revamp although a cool idea I guess defeats the purpose grinding for runes for the runewords.As a matter of fact the strongest items in the game are still rare items,just rolling them is another story.So a revamp of items is unnecessary if you can find your GG rares

Not a fan of the remove indestructible from Grandfather unless replaced by repair durability. I know the idea is probably to make it roll as Eth, then Zod it, but the drop rate is so low on it, to finally have one drop just to be eth and require a Zod to make it usable, is a smack in the face. Same with Schaeffer’s Hammer, and any other item you have done that with. Melee already is rough on durability, and those repair or indestructible mods are highly valuable for PvM and should be preserved.

I only glanced through the rest, but most seemed ok to me. Dunno if they would really make some of the stuff really used, especially flamebellow.

“Good job?” I must have missed it. What did they change besides the boots of Nat’s set now being able to be upgraded? Does anybody honestly use anything other than the angelic jewelry, and maybe the three other sets that were already being used (Ik/Trang/Tal)?

This is the main problem. Before synergies were added there were more hybrid possibilities and it felt to me like there were more customizable options for characters. Too many monster buffs are the main reason so many uniques (like the Buriza mentioned) are now practically unusable. :frowning:

I personally would prefer unique and rare items get boosted over runewords getting nerfed, but I would much prefer monsters be nerfed back to where they used to be.

It’s major reason why I have more admiration for uniques over runewords. Runewords have no lore attached to them and their overall appearance including the text is lackluster in comparison.

In Diablo 1 when you pick up Arkaine’s Valor, the characters have a voice line attached to it (and every time you put it on). It makes the atmosphere feel much more immersive.

So EBOTD is required level 69, Death is 64, Grief 60, and the item that originated from Diablo 1, called THE GRANDFATHER, is required level 81? What’s going on here man? Why did the Peter Hu turn these OG items into dog s*** items?

This is an end game item, it’s hard to find, it has the name THE GRANDFATHER. It needs to be a good item.

That 5% to experience earned is a nice touch.

There was more done than meets the eye. Upping Death’s Sash now gives a great midgame source of CBF with full belt slots for one. Hwanin’s Bill and Belt upped makes a great mid tier set for a WW Barb. Vidala’s and Arctic Set upped to exceptional makes a great Nightmare progression set until you can find better. While this stuff might not be god tier farming equipment in Hell, it gives quite a bit of new itemization to the mid game.

So being viable only between, let’s say, lvl 20-30 is like 0.05 of the game… that’s useless

99% of all items are useless in ARPGS. Only the BiS items are “useful.”

No patch will be able to change this, so why waste time on it? ARPGs are slot machines with a game slapped on top. At the end of the day all non BiS items will ALWAYS just be non winning spins at a slot machine.

I mean there is an argument for this one… with enough jewels it just becomes higher damage no leach ebotd… but the investment would be insane for a weapon that honestly just ends up about as good as a Grief.

What would really happen though is a cash shop 100% CB weapon for people that buy 5 Jah’s + Zod to slam into it. So it just ends up busted.

So rather than buffing, should items like Tyrael’s or GF have their droprates reduced so they’re at least “mid game” items?

It seems like it would be the more boring route to take even if it does make sense. Since Tyrael’s is so hard to find, shouldn’t it have the potential to be BIS as well?

The problem with GF right now is that it requires level 81 and from what I read on most GF threads, people sell it to the vendor. Shouldn’t there be a better alternative to this? If it’s truly garbage, then either it should have it’s level lowered to 50 (with droprate)? Or have the potential to be the godly GF once again. It’s sad to see how much nostalgia people have for this item and now they just call it trash.

Personally I wouldn’t even look at level reqs as a consideration. I mean level 81 is something you can hit solo in a long day of play or a fraction of that playing with others online. I mean all levels before the 90’s go by so fast anyway ya know?

99% are useless when the Unique itemization is built on power

But if it’s built on diversity(speciality item) and build enabling abilities, it’s far less items that become useless

If everything brings something different, nothing is objectively better than something else

A hammer isn’t better than a saw and a saw isn’t better than a screw driver

Stuff like hoto is a shining example on how to not make items lol

+3 to all should exist

It should be found on multiple items restricted to specific tree or elemental type

Ie;

  • Elite iceblink +3 cold

  • elite qua hegan +3 magic skills

  • astreon +4 combat

  • elite worm skull +3 poison skills

  • etc

This isn’t building a boat though. It’s an ARPG.

This also isn’t 2001. There are Calcs online that will easily show the math that anyone can plug items into and see what’s “BiS” BiS will always be the end goal, and nothing will change that.

A better analogy would be Power Tools > Hand Tools when the objective is speed.

There will always be BIs, but if all items are created with unique perks, they will all be BIs for different builds

Except they won’t. Because the item that farms the fastest will always be taken over the “utility item”

Even if you made all items statistically identical except a single “utility” slot… whatever utility slot added to clear speed the most would be used.

Interesting items are great for tabletop roleplaying. It just doesn’t work in ARPGS.

I’m not saying things couldn’t be “closer” to balanced… but there are sooo many other issues/bugs I’d prefer them working on first.

The mere fact that not 100% of people play hammerdin invalidates your assumption

Even if not the best, people want to play different builds

Therefor, “best builds” with the BiS items existing doesn’t invalidate the need for diversity of build enabling and empowering Unique items
