I honestly think they wanted to keep the “sting” of building a character wrong (especially with limited gear options) as part of the game.
Seasoned players delt with the hardships of the obstacles in Hell difficulty. Softening the blow to future players of the game would only do more to rob them of that same experience.
“Seasoned coal miners had to deal with black lung and strangled canaries. Modern ventilation PPE only robs newer generations of that same experience.” ~ Slope, A. Slippery
Look, as I just said, the game is difficult and people shouldn’t cheat ONLINE because it ruins the experience for everyone who DOESN’T cheat.
At the same time, there’s a limit to how much sense “Appeal to Tradition” really makes. To you, a grizzled die-hard veteran who traveled uphill in the snow both ways to get his Enigma, pain and suffering is all you know. Denying you anguish is denying your identity. It’s cruel to make it less cruel for you, and I acknowledge that is your horrific burden to bear.
For the rest of us, though? Maybe it doesn’t have to be quite so bleak. The newer generations have it easier by design, after all. The game could stand to be left exactly as is, I agree - full flavor difficulty for the likes of those who like it, and single player offline for pampered soft-bottoms like me who eat mayonnaise and hate freedom.
There are plenty of options of easy-to-play, hold-your-hand, offer guidance games out there. Nothing is stopping anyone from playing them. If the games difficulty is taken down a rung, there will always be the next rung of players who still think it’s too hard. Keep going, and eventually all we’ll have to do to play the game is breathe. Is that what you want?
Except that’s NOT what you’re arguing for. Let me quote you again:
And specifically, when regarding “hardships” you in that post, were talking about perma-borking your characters:
Maybe it’s finally time, in 2025, to let go of what people born several hundred years prior might have wanted? And in the context of this game, perhaps we can stop pandering to developers that aren’t even in the company anymore?
There are also plenty of other games that are WAY harder than D2. Why aren’t you playing those? Let me make this game easier if I want to, while you go enjoy Elden Ring.
EDIT: Look, we can dance around it all night but the bottom line is you want permabork and I don’t. You’ll never change my mind, and I’ll never change yours. So I propose we just both drop it before one of us perma-borks our forum privileges.
Look, I think my first response to you in this thread was a massive mistake. It’s gone NOWHERE productive and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere else but downhill. It’s probably 100% my fault for that too, but for the record:
I already have my wish. YOU also have your wish. That’s all that needs to be said at this point.
I’d agree with this only for blizz sorc, or if you like having a LR wand on swap. The sunder charms in their current implementation are only good for taking endgame gear builds and making them stronger. Then there’s the magic sunder which is completely pointless, and I don’t imagine D2R devs, if such a thing exists anymore, are going to add more items with magic pierce to make this item matter.
