Trying to survive Hell

Here’s what I don’t get. I rearrange all the stuff on my hammerdin, so first I tried to have 75% all res, 75% block on boss and then fill up with MF for the rest.
So that gave me about 250-300mf. But in an 8player game or even single player game I’m weak, I take 2 hits and need to pot, sometimes I get one shotted.

So then I switched it up and added lots of +max resist, absorb and reduced damage.
I ended up with damage reduced by 15%, 85% all res using an upped darkglow, boosted my defense by a ton to 2723 (well,a ton compared to before).
I also have 15% fire absorb, 20% cold absorb + 15 fire absorb.

Okay so this should keep me alive but NO. I get one shotted by a random mob in act1 black marsh…what the heck. How do I survive hell?

I rather be very tanky than stack on mf on this character but I can’t get tanky how much I try.

Tell me…what am I lacking based on what I’ve decribed?

It may be an HP pool issue. Having 75% all res in hell should be plenty. Did you spend too much into Dex (or other stats) instead of vitality?

What level are you?

Your ‘to get hit’ rating has a level component. If you are a few levels under the area you are in you will get hit more. This is related to your deflating as well.

Ya levels a big component, if your 85+ then that’s not the issue. I know my pally was pretty unkillable unless hit with curses and ultrafast mobs. He had vgaze and ss for 50% Dr, had about 20 magic dmg reduction and 20ish damage reduction. 75-85 res and umm 80%? Block. And I think fire and cold absorb. He only had like 150ish Mf I believe.

% Dr and # Dr get calculated at different points so having both is good.

a lot of it is just character level. even in the blood moor when you first start act 1, hell enemies are way higher level than you would think. the jump from nightmare to hell is way harsher than the jump from normal to nightmare.

another is your health pool. aside from a sorceress running an energy shield build, there isn’t a single class in the game that should be putting a single point into energy. if you are tempted to put a point into energy, put it into vitality instead, and buy more mana pots and use an insight polearm on your act 2 mercenary if you really hurt that much for mana.

you should only have enough points into strength to equip your gear. it’s 156 base strength to carry a monarch shield, or if you are rich enough points to equip whatever armor you used for enigma and enigma’s strength bonus should let you equip everything else. put the rest of those points into vitality.

you should only have enough points into dexterity to equip your gear, if required. my pally doesn’t have any gear that requires dex at all, although i’m not in hell yet so i might find some later, i dunno. put those points into vitality.

any time you’re in doubt about where to put points, put those points into vitality.

you’ll get more “effective” defense from gaining levels. just like it’s harder for you to hit enemies higher leveled than you, it’s easier for enemies that are higher level to hit you. as you level up that will first equalize, and then you’ll surpass them and get hit less because you are higher level than they are, and they’ll “whiff” more often and do less damage to you. don’t fall into the trap thinking you can get more tanky by pumping dex. vitality + levels are more effective than the defense stat.

area levels are completely borked in hell also.

lol blood moor is 68 but den of evil is 79 for example

Stop moving. Your Defense and Shield Block becomes Zero when you move.

Defense:

  1. if you can get high defense, aim for it
  2. defense can “reduce” (over time) damage that requires attack rating
  3. defense is useless against spells, elemental, posison, and magical attacks
  4. If you have high defense, walk, don’t run! (when around enemies)
  5. Defense is only useful in high amounts!

In D2 no matter how tough you are if the mobs spawn with right combination of stuff they will still hurt. A combination of good gear and high level will make you feel a lot stronger but you can still die if your not paying attention. This is what makes it such a good game.

Extra fast mana burn might aura and you with damage amp on your head will have your finger on that potion button lol

biggest thing that i see is your lack of damage reduction. 15% is ok but for any character that will be taking hits, getting to the 50% DR cap is very important. your resists seem alright & defense is useless stat in PvM just fyi… I would ask how much life you have? Hopefully you use holy shield and didn’t have to dump too much into dex for max block.

other some rare monsters combos and champion packs can hurt even to perfectly geared characters, so you might be doing well anything wrong.

ok first of all forget defense

in hell difficulty for Defense to be effective you need like 100,000 def
and thats only reachable with specific pally and barb builds…but in reality you dont wanna aim for such build as they are awful at kill speed

2 darkglow is thrash…it increase your cap resist to 85 true…but your resist will still equal to 0 if you dont got +resists gear
Cap Resist is not gaining resist…you simply enable raising it highter by using + resists gear

make yourself a Spirit Sword and Shield to begin with…those are super cheap(Tal Thul ort Amn)…use a 65% All resists pally shield for the spirit…you get easy +95 to 3 resists and 65 to the others)
Budget Armor Wise(Nef + Lum)(50% all resists)
costier armor but better are
Chain of Honor(Dol Um ber Ist)(2 skill 65% all resists)
Enigma(Jah ith ber(2 skill, ton of str gain(think of it as +300 Life), give you the teleport skill)…you make enigma in the lowest str req armor alway…mage plate, breastplate, archon plates, Dusk Shroud
do note if you got a decent torch and annilus you can use highter str req armor to make nigma in)
Budget Gloves: Magefist
best gloves: Trang oul(on top of the fcr you also net 30% cold resist)
both gloves should go for cheap either way(easy to acquire)
option 3: Chancie glove at a minor stats sacrifice for MF
Budget Belt: String of Ear
best Belt: Arachnid Mesh
Boots: any rare boots with super high resist or war traveller for mf
budget helm: peasant crown///meh quality circlet
good helm: Shako(Harlequin Crest)…or some super expensive circlet
that has stats superior to shako
Rings: Bul-kathos//Nagelring//40 mf magic ring//SoJ
Amulet try crafting yourself a beast one with cube
formula to craft casters amulet is Ral + P Amethyst + junk mods blue jewel + and a blue Amulet Acquire from hell difficulty…DO NOT DO CRAFTING BELLOW LVL 90 !..lvl 95 will net you the best results but at 90 will get fairly good rolls too

charm wise…just carry a bunch of +life…its pretty neat…you dont need a full assortment of combat skiller to perform greatly as an hammerdin
even +5 all resist small charms are lovely too

do be warn though…there is currently 1 bug i’am aware of…enemies that are currently BOTH Cold and Lightning enchanted will ignore your resists…so steer clear of melee range with them…or if you gotta melee…do the hit and run tactic so you dont get melt in seconds

That combo will my fingers on alt f4

Hell is hell for every class.

The pit is a lever 85 zone in act 1. Farm it not only cuz it’s good, but I’ll get You a little familiar with hell.

It gets way wonky in act 3 and hours hyperbolic in act 4 and hyperbolic on steroids in act 5.

Also when you are running your Defense is set to 0 and your block is only 1/3.
So it makes it easy for mobs to hit you, unless youa re way higher lvl then them.

Also maybe you dont have big enough Hp pool ? I had around 1,5k before enigma and cta and was never oneshot on my trapsin (0 block btw). Now with 3,4k+ its facetank fest almost.

He said he is using a hammerdin. According to maxroll you can put points into dex for max block if he has spent points into the right skills to help like using holy shield along with enough into dex and the right shield to help make it easy to obtain max block without spending too much into dex.

Running lowers shield block to 1/3rd of your base block chance, not 0.

Correction. You lose all defense and block becomes a maximum of 25% based on the 1/3 loss for running. You have all your defense and block chance while WALKING. You’re welcome.
