don’t upgrade your high runes

i have a guy in my friend list who i sometimes speak with in party chat that was upgrading his runes so he could get HoTo and CTA. me and couple others told him to stop. he listened an then worked his way to an enigma

Mannnn go enjoy the game… its sooo good and because of that you’ll figure things out yourself.

Keep most uniques, play with friends if possible

Be min level 20-21 when you go act 3. When you start act 5 be level 25.

Lets goooo

Direraven, what console are you on? Which at are playing… hardcore, ladder or non ladder? Online or offline?

What console system are you playing on, and online/offline, sc or hc?

I played D2 when it first came out, for around 18 months before giving up on the game due to nerfing by Blizzard (nerfed Blizzard spell, pre respec options, so my char was totally screwed and I saw no reason to play anymore). Back in those days, playing classic, rune words didn’t exist and I didn’t use them at all when I purchased LOD.

My advice is to try a sorc first time - the ability to teleport around mid game is invaluable and a real time saver. Use rune words too. If going with a sorc, make sure to use “ancients pledge” shield and “stealth” chest. Both are easy to find runes for, and easy to find socketed items too, and easy to make. Both will last you into nightmare diff. You can farm the countess in Act 1 (Black marsh waypoint) over and over for runes to. On normal diff, she is pretty easy to kill. For helm, you could go with “ralral” (i.e. socket 2 ral runes) for 60% fire resistance, but imho, it’s not really needed. I would instead really recommend you going with 2 x topaz gems in your 2 OS (open socketed) helm. Get those topaz as best as possible, preferably perfect. That will increase your MF (magic find) and really help out with getting better gear early on in the game. Each perfect topaz would give you 24% MF, so 2 of them would be 48%. If you can get MF on other items, without harming your resistances and damage, then do so.

For nightmare diff, make sure you are max with all resistances. This is even more critical with hell diff.

Try and find and stack small charms with +life and + all resistances too.

Try and save your act 5 Larzak quest reward to socket an item for a “monarch” shield (4 OS), which you can use the “spirit” runeword with. The biggest improvements for me was equipping “spirit” and “insight” on my follower. The latter rune word helps with mana regen - I now very rarely have to pop a potion in my belt! Insight will not be usable though until ~clvl 58 or so due to the strength and dex requirements on your follower. The same with the “spirit” rune word shield - it’ll require 150 strength. It is absolutely worth it too imho. Get your vitality up early to bump life, then work on strength for spirit, then put more points into vitality. There is no need to put in points to either dex or energy imho.

Items to lust for:

skin of the vipermagic
the oculus orb/wand
war traveler boots (great MF plus other useful stats)
shako harlequin crest helm

SOJs (stone of jordans x 2) and mara’s kaleidoscope round out top notch items for a sorc. Add the arachnid spidermesh belt and you’re end game farming.

I’m pretty much just slowly levelling up and rune hunting and gear hunting for the holy grail list.

Crafting - blood amulets can be really nice, even better than a mara’s, but you have to be really high level to potentially craft, RNG being nice, +2 blood amulets, best around clvl 93, but any level past clvl 89 imho. Make sure if crafting, that any amulet/jewel used is found at also that level (or purchased/gambled from a vendor).

Imbuing at Charsi (act 1) - I used my first imbueing reward around act 3/4 normal diff to get a better weapon (I was RNG lucky). Other than that, imho, leave the imbue reward for amulets when you get to clvl 93.

That’s about all I can think of now.

Don’t be afraid to farm areas multiple times to upgrade your stuff and level up.

This is a pretty challenging game, you don’t have to worry about over levelling. You’ll need all the help you can get!
