Okay so I apologize in advance if this was asked/addressed before but I’m not gonna scour through 500 pages of trading posts.
The achievements for hitting 99 and 99 in hardcore on xbox (trophies on playstation) are absolutely f***ing ludicrous. It takes a grand total of 3.5 BILLION experience to reach 99. 98 to 99 is 291 million and that literally takes longer than 1-98 because of the insane experience penalty.
The vast majority of people who bought this game are the people who played it originally back on PC. We are older now. We have responsibilities, jobs, families. Many of us do not have nearly the time we used to have to play games. Even if we do, many of us do not want to sit and run the same 3 areas literally 6,000 times. Especially when drop rates for anything decent are so insultingly low. It makes it incredibly demoralizing and not even fun to play anymore when I can end up running the same area 100 times and not get a single decent piece of gear.
Just last night I ran a hell countess and got an ith rune. AN ITH. On hell. Why bother to run it on hell when I can get the same rune (or better) on normal? I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve gotten drops like this. Level 3 set items from nightmare bosses. 3 gems from hell bosses and uniques. There’s next to no incentive.
There’s so many better achievements that could have been made instead of this. It’s just a cheap way to keep people playing. D2 was already a grind before this. There needs to be some adjustment for this. Scale down the xp penalty, introduce a new zone/expansion/event that has higher level monsters or more of a challenge. SOMETHING.
I feel the same way, i barely lvl up from 86 to 87 and when imagine that have 12 more lvls to 99 i feel so miserable. On other hand, when see mrllama 1000 lvl 99 characters on his youtube chanel i imagine that dude have no life and no soul.
I think there should be additional ways to level up past 90 (I think ubers areas gives pretty decent xp)
On the other hand… You don’t actually have to do every achievement in the game. I played this game for years on pc, never leveled past 94/95. I haven’t even looked at the achievements on d2r. Why would this ruin the game for you if you can’t complete one or if its like… Actually an achievement (its not.) to reach lvl 99?
Yeah it’s insane. I don’t know how anyone can actually do this.
What about if you die? Does that set you back a week of grinding?
I’m all for hard achievements but this one is basically impossible.
I agree, I dont think I will achieve platinum. I dont necessarily play games for platinums but I enjoy getting them in the process. I am enjoying this game but once it comes to the point where im just grinding to hit an achievement that seems very time consuming, I wont enjoy that.
I dont know how many players who will play the game long enough to reach level 99 but I dont imagine anyone playing just to hit the achievement. Maybe a level cap increase might come in the future making 99 easily achieved.

In the console version there is an xbox achievement for reaching 99 as well as one for reaching 99 in HC. For many people, particularly those on this (like myself) do not consider a game “complete” until we have finished every achievement. To include one like this is asinine and disrespectful to people’s time and the fact that despite my love (and nostalgia) for D2…there are in fact other games I do want to play.

it’s pretty pitiful to see you need your “achievements” just to play a game.

I know. I play only on xbox.
How is having an achievement to reach 99 disrespectful lol this is insane. You don’t have to get every achievement or even any of them.
If they removed the achievement for reaching level 99 would you still feel like you completed the game if the highest level you reached was only 85?

I like having ludicrous goals to aim for. Everything is handed to you on a plate in modern gaming - which is part of the reason I find myself more and more enjoying older games. Back when they were made by gamers for gamers.

They should lower the experience penalty. It should not take years to level to 99. This should happen because many players reach act 5 below level 25 and because of the harsh penalty they have to go back to act 4 and level. That right there is poor design.
Why in the holy hell balls do you think all challenges need to be within your personal reach?
The bar is set. The challenge is clear. Either rise to the challenge or fail.
These participation ribbon kids are insane!
Lord of darkness, Satan, please destroy these plebs and show them no one admires losers.

The problem with this is the purists.
Any change/modification to the existing D2 will likely result in an uproar, which blizzard don’t want to deal with.
Look at the simple gold pick up change. They even added the option to make it so you can pick it up manually so as not to upset the purists.
You have to be very careful like walking on egg shells when dealing with the purists.
Any mention of change such as increasing stash tabs or increasing drop rates will result in uproar.
I’ve moved on from this game now honestly. I respect the brutal nature of D2 but it’s not for me. Once I can clear hell solo, I’m done.
If you choose to get a character to level 99 then your giving up your family, job and friends. If you don’t have these things then I guess it doesn’t matter.
If you do have these things and reply with “it won’t affect any of that”, then be prepared to spend a year or two before it happens (and that’s if you don’t die a single time).
And if you do get a char to level 99, then what? Do you pat yourself on the back as a reward? There’s nothing you get once you get to level 99, no reward, nothing. Except of course a small dopamine hit of the achievement unlocking.
I ask, is it worth it? You could have already got 1000/1000 gamer score in 20 other games before getting this achievement.
it’s totally worth it because the challenge is the same for everyone, it’s like the classic Doom trophy Not So Bad, they made it harder to get not easier, so you know you did something awesome when you get it
all that effort, you blame everyone else, except yourself.
in the end, no one cares for your achievement, and they most certainly aren’t going to care about your “gamer score”.
just play the game, enjoy it, or don’t.
just like every other game.
I don’t think getting to level 99 should be easy, but just a little bit easier. They should increase the exp gain from Uber monsters and regular monsters in the portal so that it would be worth it to do it for the exp. I recall people were using it to level before a patch but just make it so low levels can’t get exp from it. God forbid there be another way to level besides baal runs. Also considering how tough it is to get to 99, they should reinstate getting exp from spawned monsters. I don’t know why this was ever changed.
If you are reaching act five by level 25 that means you are still in normal. You don’t lose xp in normal, unless I’m mistaken.
Yeah you do. If you are below level 25 you will gain very little exp on the bloody foothills and on. It’s poor design. I’ve reached act 5 at level 23 many times and had to level in act 4 just because I was getting very poor exp.
I don’t recall losing so in normal so I’ll have to go check again. However I’m not quite sure what this has to do with an achievement of getting to lvl 99 anyway.
Edit: just went and checked and I was correct. You do not lose xp if you die in normal difficulty.
