Old player here. You know I love grindy games but for some reason the D2 grind is just not fun. It feels like you hit huge walls of progress and you have to keep doing stuff for a LOOOOOOOOOONG time until you make a tiny increment of progress. I think that’s my problem with it. In other grindy games, the increments are at a regular cadence so that you know hey if I keep investing time in this I’ll definitely get to a point where the game is actually fun. In D2, the grind progress is non-deterministic and based on RNG. This is just not fun. Other games, like Destiny 2, have this mechanic too but for some reason it is more enjoyable. I dunno. I don’t think D2R is worth the time investment. I think because it’s an old game probably partially designed by people who used to play MUDs, there was a culture back then that if you were “uber” you invested thousands of hours to dominate the game. It never really made sense.
I hope D4 isn’t a disaster. Diablo Immortal definitely is. I also hope someone figures out how to not do what Grim Dawn and Titan Quest did. Every build feels like the exact same grind due to the game balance. I think extreme game balance = no fun. There has to be a solution to this in game design. And for those masochists out there, you are a minority. Go play Dark Souls.

If it’s not fun then move on.
You definitely don’t want grindy games

You didn’t read my entire post. I love OTHER grindy games. They are fun. There are different kinds of grinds. D2 grind is just not fun. It’s fun to a point then it’s just no fun at all. I actually had the same experience with Titan Quest too. It’s super fun to a point then it is no fun at all. Even if you do all the uber meta things. It’s like the meta almost doesn’t matter. I also think D2 suffers from the same issue as Guild Wars. It eventually punishes solo players forcing grouping. At least Titan Quest and Grim Dawn can be played solo to the highest end game I guess.

Did you really compare to destiny 2? I played a bunch with my 13 year old boy, oh please… if it isn’t fun then it isn’t fun, move on, lots of different arpgs out there for everyone to try. D2R for me is still better than 99.99% of all other video games.

It’s fun to a point then the time investment becomes crazy. I guess if you have no life and can spend thousands of hours, by all means carry on. Some of us actually have a life. Or I guess via trading you can make the game P2W.

If you don’t like a game for x reason, and that reason outweighs all other reasons you like the game, then don’t play it.
It’s a 23 year old game with a new coat of paint, some qol and a few new features.
It’s a remaster.
I don’t play pong anymore. Sure it was fun when it was a new game, but better games have come along setting the standard higher.

I have a 13 year old boy, a full time job and a new baby due in July. I have a life thanks. I only play 1 or 2 hours a day if that. I enjoy the struggle, I don’t care that I’m not rocking enigmas, lws, coas, etc on each of my characters like I had over 15 years ago in high school… if I really cared, I could just hop on d2jsp and sell all the stuff I’ve found as a solo player over the past 1.5 years in d2r and get whatever I need but naw it doesn’t bother me…

Then you don’t know what I’m talking about. I’m way past you in terms of end game content. That’s what I’m referring to. Where you are, the game was fun.

Huh, dude keep your epeen in your pants, who gives a rats a$$. You can cut it anyway you want, there is nothing special here, it isn’t fun for you move on. Why rant about it on a forum where people love the game…

Because Blizzard obviously is listening to the community. The new mosaic runeword for Assassin and making other builds more playable. They are obviously evolving the game. They even added sunder charms. Obviously there was room for improvement and they have been making improvements. I hope they continue to do this.

But you’re complaining about RNG and the grind (which is weird when you’re bragging you’re further along than us lol) that has nothing to do with the changes made but ok. Adios muchacho, I’ll move onto the next cry baby thread.

Dunno about that. Elden Ring did get GOTY and is on the top 20 most played games on Steam (which doesn’t even count all the console players). A lot of people do like the struggle. It’s a poor comparison anyway since soulsborne games are deterministic for the most part and rely more on skill than luck (again, for the most part, not 100%), so it’s a different kind of struggle.

D2 is a bad career choice!
Dragon Warrior on NES, now thats a grind!
D2, random rewards or nothing for your effort.
Dragon Warrior, level 30 is end game but getting there takes patience of steel.

I’ve done that many times. Dragon Warrior 2 was actually much harder. If you want to call out a grind in classic console RPGs, Phantasy Star 2 is what you want to reference. Now that was a grind and I still go back and do it periodically.

I should play dw 2, 3, and 4! I own prestine carts. Boy is my back log massive!
Very legit complaint that I also said long, long time ago. Sadly D2R devs are disappointing.
Game is for bots not humans.

It’s a deeper problem than that. If you take anything and make it into a competition especially for position on a hierarchy, it will encourage people to find ways to not play by the rules (cheat). It becomes more about how to get ahead of the other person by any means necessary. Bots, wall hacks, auto aim, etc. They all do the same thing: eliminate fun.
A long time ago, me and many others suggested that D2 ought to allow people to host their own servers like Q3 and UT, but no one listened. I am still of the opinion that having multiple communities instead of one community is better. I’ve yet to see a gaming community successfully adopt a truly pluralistic culture.
