When i killed the boss and completed the quest " The forgotten tower" in act 1 hell, the chess with runes never opened.
The Chest in Tower Level 5 does not drop Runes. The Countess drops the Runes.
However, the Chest should pop open and drop several piles of Gold, some Potions and possibly some items. This only happens the first time you kill The Countess on each Game Difficulty, as you stated, when you “completed the quest”.
I don’t remember this ever happening to me, but I’ve read where, even though it’s very rare, it is possible that The Countess may not drop Runes.
When Blizzard’s QA Team reads this thread, I’m sure they will look into it.
