Terrible UI, delete character button

The delete character button is some terrible UI decision. I know Blizz Activision is some C tier small indie company unable to test their products, but still, the delete button with no identification clearly looks like a close game button on the main screen. To be honest, the option to delete a character should be impossible to access accidentally, but I guess no one thought about that.

FIY, I just lost all my Sigon and I’m not thrilled about it. I’m just lucky it wasn’t my main I guess.

yeah they are aware of that, and we get about 10 of these threads every day

On the UI side, the vertical listing of characters names is also pretty bad. Once you have a bunch of characters and you need to find a mule it will be annoying. Having tabs like in SWTOR where you can see a few characters per tab in large icons would be nice.

Thankfully I haven’t deleted anyone yet but I see how it’s an issue.

Yeah, Blizzard definitely needs to replace the ‘x’ with ‘delete’. It tells you it is a delete button when you hover over it, and gives you a confirmation window if you want to delete too.

Yep just deleted my 68 hardcore paladin that Ive been playing since launch since I was distracted and big red x usually means exit not delete. How the hell do they not atleast have a “type delete” failsafe for this is beyond me. Bullshlt.

add a type DELETE if you want to delete the character as confirmation that would fix it too.

:man_facepalming: This is not on Blizzard, its on you for not paying attention. Why would the game exit button be BELOW YOUR CHARACTERS???

You even get a prompt, Are you sure you want to delete this CHARACTER?
Yes or No…

Wake up, pay attention, stop whining at Blizzard for your own ignorance.

I mean, even if you get a prompt, it’s still terrible design. People often get distracted or play the game while inebriated/high.

Taking a symbol that normally means something else (x) and making it mean something completely different just isn’t a good move.

This isn’t hard folks. The more of these posts I see the more embarrassed I am. We truly are losing the ability to function on a basic level.

Looking forward to it.

I feel about 15/85 on this topic. 15% of me feels for the kids who couldn’t read the prompt “Are you sure you want to delete your character?” without clicking yes before comprehending. I mean as a society we have trained people to just click through ToS etc without reading, or after a 8 hour session late at night you fail to read and delete. I can see it happening.

The other 85% of me feels people need to pay attention. I never uave seen an exit “X” be in the lower right of a UI. It typically is always at the top right or top left. There is also a giant box which says Exit Diablo on left.

The solution is simple. Replace the “Are you sure you want to delete your character” with a box prompt that forces you to type in DELETE rather than a simple yes confirm button.

Back in the day I was scammed out of items, lost characters to hardcore pks etc. I learned, it made me cautious about trusting others blindly and gave me some life lessons. Learn from mistakes and move on don’t complain about how this isn’t your fault to a forum expecting people to be sympathetic to your mistakes.

My 2 cents, probably worthless.

I didn’t delete any of my characters so I can’t say first-hand, but I’d imagine the reasons people are posting this are a mix of venting, and not wanting it to happen to others when it can be easily prevented. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt in these types of situations.

Many of the skill tree’s have their exit button in the bottom right, along with the classic D2 character panel had the exit in the bottom center/right. Having the exit not in the top right or top left isn’t out of character for D2.

When I first launched D2R there was a quick “tutorial” that walked you through all the buttons on the screen, aka I knew that the X is there for character deletion.

All the same, it’s really strange that they chose an X (that virtually everywhere else means “close”) when “Delete Character” wouldn’t have occupied much more screen space.

Yes, people should pay more attention, learn to read, blah blah blah, but it’s also true that this is just bad UI design.

Dang this is giving me flash backs to WoW adding timers and typing boxes to confirm even deleting items cause people can’t own up to being stupid.

Actually, the brain mostly functions on autopilot for remedial tasks. Yours must be defective if everything you do must be scrutinized.

Dang, asking the Diablo community to think for 5 seconds in the menu really is considered defective.
