This charm made me realize how close-minded D2 players are, do you even realize how many builds will become viable because of it?
Why don’t you people find games suited for your time? There are significantly more casual games than there are games like diablo 2. Why do you need to ruin the game for other people (I’m talking plurally here, addressing all casuals trying to screw up the meta).
Hell, diablo 3 is literally perfect for you. Diablo 4 will also be very similar to diablo 3. You have two diablo games fit for you, why take a sh*t on this as well?
Its bad because there are definitely a large group of people who won’t ever find one. Even if this change is enough to entice them to come back and play for, say, a hundred hours… they won’t find one, they’ll get frustrated and go play a more rewarding game. Immunities are bad game design, and this is a bandaid that addresses nothing. Those who still play don’t need them, and those who would return for them won’t find them. It ignores the core issue.
Immunities are here because of the synergy system. Yes it was a poor design choice when they brought them in, but to fix the system now would require fixing the synergy system and by consequence monster balance as well.
Synergies were brought in to make people spec into otherwise useless skills. But that created a problem, builds became much more linear. Just pick the strongest skill and fill in all the synergies and you’re done. To force people to make creative choices in making builds, monster health was increased and immunities were brought in. You can choose either between power or flexibility.
Right now they taking one part away of what makes this system work. With immunities gone we are left with the problem that the original game designers wanted to avoid when they brought in the synergy system. One dimensional paint by number builds. I am not saying removing immunities are a bad idea, just do it properly so that it deals with the whole system. Right now they are half as sing it and leaving a broken system in its wake. Why not save it for the next patch dedicated to fixing this rather than tacking it on like an afterthought with this one.
Sunder Charm is ultimately a bad addition because it does two things.

It allows them to forego having to completely revamp each and every Monster’s Resistance. Namely, if a Monster is natively Cold Immune(140 for example), they don’t have to rebalance their resistance to something more feasible(say 110, or heck 95 to remove Immunity entirely). It doesn’t even care if the Monster is a Unique or Super Unique who come with Unique Monster Bonuses(ex: Fire Enchanted) that grant them increased Resistance. It makes those Monster bonuses completely irrelevant and they’ve been in the game since it’s INCEPTION. If you want to obliterate a core game mechanic, these charms certainly do that.

It makes skills that are notoriously strong(Conviction in particular) 5 TIMES STRONGER. When a monster is immune to a given element, Conviction and Lower Resist(Amplify Damage/Decrepify for Physical side) work at 1/5th(20%) Efficiency. Now with these charms, getting to -100 Resistance or double Elemental damage is all but a given since Infinity(the most sought out Runeword for Elemental builds) works at 100% in ALL SITUATIONS. That means instead of 95 Resistance for FCL Immunes, they’re now at 10 RESISTANCE. Then all the -Resistance gear, which people needed to do reasonable damage to broken immune monsters are now that much stronger. Everyone is talking about Cold Sorceress being insanely broken(and she is even under current paramters but only when she breaks an immunity…) but is anyone talking about Fire and more importantly LIGHTNING with this? FFS Lightning Sorceress and Javazon are already S-Tier builds. With these charms you might as well create a new tier: Nephalem because that’s where we’re at now. -50% Resistance is easily achievable on a Lightning Sorceress(Crescent Moon + Griffons + Infinity + Sunder Charm) and that’s on Lightning Immunes… Non-Lightning Immunes… well… try double damage like a Cold Sorceress presently enjoys.
There was soooo many other options they could have done instead of this charm. Synergy rebalance so that to promote more hybrid builds(aka reducing synergy investment). Hybrid builds circumvent immunity but apparently that’s a bad thing in the eyes of Blizzard with these charms. The balance between caster and melee is only going to widen with this and honestly, why make a Barbarian or any melee build anymore. Seriously WTF Blizzard…
Because the casual market makes up for the largest consumer base.
Ironic. Most of the crybabies here hate capitalism.
D2 Should remain a republic. Democracy is just the enslavement of the 49% by the 51%.
They don’t give a crap. This is the kind of company that tries to sneak pay to win as often and whenever they can get away with it. They do not give a crap about quality and the player experience.
I don’t know what kind of idiots think they’re going to be able to sell Diablo 2 to a younger generation. All they are doing is chasing off the people that actually play this game.
If you remove each Immune of all monsters in the Terror Zone and change the maximum resistance to 95%, it will be over… Why make a Thunder charm? Are developers stupid?
They’re responding to feedback. The title of this thread is wrong. The philosophy of trying to make the grind to 99 a bit more enjoyable or easier (TZ are a bit extreme XP gain tho) and to have a way for all chars to become end game universal (it should be only end game builds that achieve this) are actually a good philosphy.
Their execution and though process is lame and weak. They could have made a harder difficulty past hell. They could have created brand new content. TZ are okay even if it was just a temporary fix. Meanwhile the charms are a shortcut that they didn’t need to take. They could have made other changes to either A. make infinity work for all, or B. make each type of damage have their own infinity level runeword. While also balancing the immunities out in the game. But instead these trash devs who think they know whats up because they simply copied a game are making massive changes without any intelligence behind them. They lack the ability to understand even the basic mechanics of D2, but they’re in charge of the game now, a game they didn’t create, just copy/pasted for the most part. Thats the problem when low IQ devs ask for feedback from low IQ PTR players. The players responding are the ones who in 20 years claim to have never found a HR, they dont understand how someone can full clear P8 chaos, when they struggle to manage P1. These are players that don’t understand break points or how abilities work. They use their face to mash buttons and are upset they can’t farm an enigma in 20 years.
Meanwhile all these people post in threads, they state their trash opinions, I respond destroying all their points and then they disappear. They don’t want to hear the truth or maybe they’re actually learning, but they’re gone. But a dev took what they said in the past and decided all these noob idiots must be right and are now making changes to adapt for them.
What is it about infinity that isn’t working for some people?
I put in on my orb sorc to play around with, took her from trash to reasonable. Or are we just comparing light speed builds to lesser at this point? I’m under the impression Infinity is fine, but this is without crushing numbers or trying a large variety of builds.
I definitely agree on more content. I think instead of all these new items. Do some balancing of existing content that’s been on the shelf for over a decade, and then when you have a good foundation, try a bunch of new stuff in an expansion. Rake in a bunch of cash and attempt the stated goal of “Restoring d2 to it’s former glory”
Now Iv’e had a lot of time to think during my grind. Haven’t we all? So, D4 was in development for awhile. Not too long ago the devs played it a bunch and came to conclusion it’s not fun. They lost the magic somewhere in the cycle.
My Guess, is rebuilding D2 is really a team excercise in trying to get into the minds of the old dev team. Experiencing their methods first hand and trying to capture some of that magic again. Not a bad idea if that’s the intent.
However, if I was a large shareholder/ lead dev. I’d reach out to the old team members, and say hey. Want to work on this project again? Good cash, creative liberty, but I need your mind.
The soul of this game really belongs with the original creators. This game is a relic from a different time, that had different mind sets.
We had less back then, which in fact bred resourcefulness and creativity.
It is simply that it doesn’t do the same thing for other classes that it does for light thats all. There is nothing wrong with infinity. Honestly game would be a lot cooler if even infinity wasn’t necessary, but that the more end game you got with gear/dmg the more versatile you could be. Like with trash gear you have 3 places to farm, when you get medium tier gear the medium tier immunities disappear, when you get end game gear, nobody is immune but they’re still a fight. But that will never happen.
Just need either A. infinity to break all immunes or B. have an infinity style weapon for all types of damages, so that everyone can dedicate their char to being universal at the cost of your merc weapon slot. That seems reasonable.
D4 has nothing to do with D2R staff. They had the cheapest possible devs remake a game because it shouldn’t be that hard to straight copy a 20 year old game, but they even failed to manage that. After that, these people have nothing to do because Blizzard would never trust them with anything important, so they left them in charge of D2R. Which is why these idiots think they know what they’re doing. The D2 devs shouldn’t even care what the devs origionally made for this game. They need to make educated decisions to improve the game, not just throw crap at the wall and see what might stick. But they’re simply not smart enough to figure anything out on their own, but we’re going to be stuck with it, so I’m gonna play regardless. They literally cannot go to old devs to ask for help. Probably not just because of non competes and them doing something different now, but Blizz doesn’t really care about D2R which is okay I get that, but they also could leave one decision maker there in charge of the 5 clown devs that are currently there.
BTW please don’t think the creators were some god tier geniuses either. Their game was hacked, had dupes, grushes (which i’m cool with), no common currencey, no easy way to trade/AH, those one shot mobs going to NIH and they made dclone event to get rid of duped items. They made a game we like, but they’re not infallible either.
I’m not implying this is the perfect game by a long shot. It’s certainly had it’s fair share of problems.
However I believe problems can be corrected, But’, the experience of a special game is that. Very special. Some things are tangible, and some things I cannot describe with language. D2 was in that category for me.
I haven’t been excited for a video game in years personally. I had no intention of giving blizzard another dime, and didn’t really expect much from the company as far as my tastes go.
I liked stracraft, and 2. I liked warcraft 3. Would be interested see a WC 4. I liked D2. D 3 was generally a disappointment for me. I didn’t expect much for 4. I preferred Warhammer Age of reckoning to Wow as far as mmo’s go. Still do.
But remaking D2 is exciting to me. Especially because they started with a minimalist approach to changing the experience, and I am curious as to what can gradually be built from it.
I don’t see any game dev as infallible, But I know special ideas when I experience them, even if some executions are flawed.
D2 was and is special in many ways. Personally I have never enjoyed any dungeon crawler as much as this one.
not when the 49% can just leave
d2:lod is there for me if things go wrong
the same aplies to everysingle soul here
Until LOD gets all the shiny new graphics, we are stuck with the polished version under the “Casual’s” Laws.
you
not me
nor anyone else
“nor anyone else”
Are you sure about that? Is that the final answer you’ll lay your credibility on the line for?
none of my personal feelings apply to anyone else, this includes the feeling of being stuck with something when im not
here lies my credibility
Lies by omission don’t work very well in the same thread.
i dont know what you meant here
anyway
im not stuck with the game, none of us are
we can go back to play lod the same way we can just play another game and never play anything from blizzard again
