Suggested Mercenary Changes

I always like the fact that there are different mercenaries but for most builds we tend to use the same ones from Act 2. First of all, not seeing an appearance change when equipped with armor was cool in the early 2000s, not enough memory, whatever. Now I can’t believe that hasn’t been added and they don’t have multiple versions of themselves to reflect the level of armor they are wearing. Secondly if Act 1 or 5 mercenaries got extra skills and we were able to allocate skill points into them it would add a new dynamic to the game and make them almost worth the price of giving up an act 2 aura and promote a wider diversity of builds. These two things here are what I most want to see in an update.

Literally two suggestions, lol.

oh geez lol sorry.

so you’re suggesting:

  • extra mercenary skills (just whatever kind of skill?)
and uh, not sure what you mean about the armor thing.

you do know you can equip them with gear and hand them potions right?
if you give them gear with spells on it, they work sometimes

It’s quite clear he is wondering if there could be a visual representation of what a merc is wearing the same as for player characters.

Yeah am I going insane here I thought my post was incredibly concise and clear.

I mean extra skills like, lets say you had 6 to choose from and you could choose between three of them. So act 1 merc you chose magic arrow, multi-shot, and cold arrow and contextually each had a 33% chance of being used. Maybe 3 categories for mob behavior.

don’t know how i missed that one rofl.
that’s what happens when you play diablo all night and into the afternoon.

now that that’s all cleared up. My work here is done.
As you were.

Both of your suggestions are very good.
If mercenaries can use more than one skill, I’ll be happy to have more options.
If mercenaries are enhanced, it will make classes that are hard to deal with IMMUNE more playable.

The first one is easy, its 2021 Blizzard and no reason why mercs should have 1 affixed sprite. The second, even if they split it up like you had option for one passive and 2 skills would upend the reliance on act 2 mercenaries and add more diversity and planning to a build without changing any of the core mechanics.

I like your suggestions and would like to add that I would like to see more equipment slots. In fact I would love to see the same eq slots on mercs that our own characters have.

This. All of this. Make them a proper 2nd hero and companion.

I wouldn’t mind a merc that didn’t seem so eager to die by standing in the worst possible place.

Honestly, since bugging mercs is a thing, they should just make it a feature : just have a box to check somewhere to make melee enemies ignore your merc. It’s annoying having to go to the inner cloister at the start of every game so the guy can survive.

Pathing is another thing they need to REALLY work on. As a necro without enigma Arcane Sanctuary, maggot lair, anywhere narrow is freaking painful.

Even with enigma or teleport, the merc doesn’t teleport with you half the time.

My thing is he follows me so I’m trying to move out of range of some attack with my squishy necro and he pulls off the enemy he’s attacking to follow with me. I’m like bro, just chill, you’re good. Mercs are drunk I swear.

Yeah, one trick is make a tp to town and comeback in the tp to stack everything up again. It stacks everything like you did a teleport.

I’m so confused. Go to the inner cloister?

My number one mercenary change, import the AI from Diablo 3.

The AI from Diablo 2 is mind-numbingly stupid. It has gotten me killed far too many times. The rogue shooting behind a pillar or wall. Desert merc hiding behind a wall while I get pummeled (literally teleporting in, and he runs away).

Please. Fix the AI. Surely Diablo 2 purists, who use djsp (or whatever it’s called), mods that show the roll range for an item in green text (please make this standard!).

When you’re a necro you have a lot of time to sit and observe the AI, idk how many times I did so with my face in my palm like whyyyyyy. lmao. AI could definitely use a bump.
