Edit 10/09: Thought I came and back added this perviously, but I guess I only put it at the end.
To save anyone from reading the whole thread:
Turns out I didn’t realize that one is picking all the “highlighted” (read “a little less dark”) options in each column. I thought the option that had the white outline was the option being chosen. I am leaving it all here for the benefit of anyone else who mistakenly believes the menu is providing a choice between “standard” and “expansion”. It is not.
—————————————————————-
Just to be clear, I am NOT referring to Classic vs Expansion. I am talking about the Switch “Select Game Mode” screen where, down the left side are “non-ladder”, “Standard”, and “Expansion” choices.
I created an Assassin in “standard mode”, played through to Tyreal in Act 4, where (as expected) he sent me on to Harrogoth (sp?) in Act 5 in search of Baal.
So.
The difference between standard and expansion is NOT the absence of Act 5, runes, charms, shared stash, or any other LOD-exclusive items. — the first clue being that I was able to create an expansion char in “standard” mode.
While it makes a logical sense to select “expansion”, since choosing “standard” still results in playing the expansion my question remains: what’s purpose in having both a standard and expansion button?
Since the selection of either standard or hardcore takes one immediately to the the expansion, then it is not a matter of choosing “softcore” or hardcore before the choosing the expansion.
So the “choice” of standard is superfluous, meaningless, and pointless.
Just saying.
